Marco Rubio: Medicare, Social Security ‘Weakened Us As People,’ Made Us Lazy

REpublicans...run on ending social secvrity and medicare. The senior vote is not that important and you will be just fine.

Run with it!

Yeah, well he benefited from them.

How....? They did it legally.

His parents actually know what socialism and comunism bring. I know folks who came here from Cuba and they dont like what they see going on in DC.

Sup Infidel.

My family is from Cuba. In fact, I am the first generation of my family born in America.

My family knows what dictators bring not what socialism and communism bring. They bring a regime that rules with a gun to your head no matter the ideology. Not figuratively but literally. People in my family had a lot of power and influence prior to the revolution and they literally had guns put to their heads when the Castro regime was consolidating power there. Wisely they left everything behind and got the fuck out of there.

Please don't cheapen what my family had to go thru by drawing comparisons to what they experienced and the current state of DC.

well said, I would add that if you asked them they would probably agree; the tyranny didn't come all at once, Fidel was the popular hero, it came in stages.........he did take on Batista because he was a crook and not very good at ruling what was a thriving intellectual, productive society.

Rubio is a career politician with absolutely no experience in the private sector.

If wingnuts weren't the world's phoniest hypocrites they'd reject him for that alone.

I don't think you people who voted for a Community Organizer and made him President should be talking about others and how much experience they have or don't have.

Exactly!

Don't ever expect these Obamabot fools to think before they speak.

After all, they have fully proven that they are some of the dumbest creatures walking this earth.

Both Stephanie and Jester refuse to defend that Marco Rubio is a career politician, with no private experience.

Americans may have certainly taken care of each other in the absence of formalized access to affordable health care, but that support did little to drastically ameliorate the fears and anxieties of seniors. As Ted Marmor explains in The Politics of Medicare, “The biggest fears included not being able to pay for care and risking turning to children or siblings for help, or it meant relying on the charitable attitude of the doctor or hospital. Most profoundly, it was the sense that illness or injury — bad enough themselves — could be disastrous for family finances unless you were lucky enough to have retiree coverage from a union or government plan.”

Indeed, prior to Medicare’s enactment in 1965, “about one-half of America’s seniors did not have hospital insurance,” “more than one in four elderly were estimated to go without medical care due to cost concerns,” and one in three seniors were living in poverty. Today, nearly all seniors have access to affordable health care and only about 14 percent of seniors are below the poverty line.

Rubio is a typical Republican asshole...

The poster of this OP, the fact that it's from ThinkProgress, and the closing sentence are the only negative things of the entire post.

So Rubio thinks old people are lazy and ruined, except for his parents that were welcomed with open arms from another country and enjoyed the benefits of social security and medicare.

Oh, yeah.

Or how about the speech he gave before?

We're not the ones who keep insisting that private sector experience, or the lack of it,

is a dealbreaker.

That would be you people, Shamu.
