Maine Mother Charged With Packing Pistol in Pants While Picking Children Up at School

The headlines could have easily have been this:

LEWISTON, Maine — Police say a Lewiston woman is dead after showing up at an elementary school.

Police say 30-year-old Tylor Austin was shot dead when she approached the door to Montello Elementary School to pick up her three children Friday morning. Tylor had a protection order out on the suspect who was standing by the entrance lying in wait to ambush her.

Lt. Mark Cornelio said that Austin who had a license to carry a gun for self-defense left her gun in the car. The school went into lockdown as Police searched for the suspect who later was gunned down in the parking lot after he pulled the gun on officers.

You are so right. And there was no way she would tell her kids to meet her out front - too much risk of the guy doing something to the kids.

Either way was the wrong way.

Hopefully, the police will understand and see the dilemma and give her a slap on the wrist.

Unfortunately, I don't think they will.

I have to think that if I knew someone dangerous was after me, I'd carry a gun, and I wouldn't lock it in the trunk when I went into the school because that dangerous person would know I wouldn't have the gun with me. I would be the most vulnerable, iow, in the school. Since nobody else has a gun, who's going to protect me?

I think the woman did the right thing, given the circumstances. I'd rather pay a fine, or even do jail time than be killed.

Problem is, if it's jail time, the kids could go back to the very person she has the order against.

Best things would have been to call the police, explain the situation, and ask them to escort her into the office or even just part out in front while she got the kids.

Granted, they could have said "no" or, like the other post above, the guy still may have killed her.

Just a bad situation all around. I feel for her.

Most schools have their own security force now, perhaps she could have called them and had them escort her in, or the kids out?

All I know is if there is someone dangerous after me, I'm not gonna give him an easy target.

I think most would agree that this could have been handled in a different matter but this woman's life could be ruined as well as her kids over this, which it shouldn't! A fine would be the best punishment. I'm sure this woman now knows there is a better way to handle it.

Agreed. She did what she thought was best for her safety. I doubt much will be done to her, probably a warning.

A plus, at least her ex now knows she's packing! :clap2:

and make sure he's packin too

This is starting to sound like the scene in "Reservoir Dogs"
the woman should have had enough common sense not to take a gun into the school

Right,,I think everyone here is in agreement to that. Other options she could have used were offered.

But, she was scared of her ex, and not thinking straight. Happens to all of us at one time or the other.

Oh, this is just another classic case where left-think has resulted in a law-abiding citizen being caught up in the web of idiocy. As has been pointed out many times, a 'rule' which requires that no guns be carried into a school or other premises has never prevented a single person from being harmed by a fire-arm.

Let's not lose sight of the simple fact that there is a MUCH longer standing rule regarding the unjustified taking of a human life... and someone intent on doing so isn't going to be persuaded to not do so because of a sign informing them of a rule which rests upon substantially less moral authority than "thou shalt not Murder..."

The woman made an error in judgement.

I applaude her for packing though, since here in Maine, woman who have taken out protection for abuse orders are OFTEN killed by the cretins they're trying to get away from.

A couple years back, one women who had returned to her former home with TWO POLICE ESCORTS was shot to death by the man she'd been trying to escape.

Yeah, that's right.

While these so-called cops stood around good old boying in sympathy with the guy that the woman had taken a court order out because he'd been beating her, that woman was SHOT right in front of their eyes.

So can you really BLAME that woman for taking steps NOT to victimized?

I can't.

Cops are often worthless when it comes to domestic violence.

They're often WORSE than worthless, since they're often are sympathetic to the men involved and assume that the woman is just being hysterical.

That attitude is changing, but not rapidly enough to suit me.

You ever read the book "The Burning Bed"?

Ya know,, they actually make pocketbooks for ladies,, to conceal guns in.. you don't even have to pull the gun out,, just shoot it. worth the $100 bucks they sell for..

She'll be fine, the courts know how these things go. The cops had to pinch her, the court will tut-tut and fine her fifty bucks and rightly so.

Back in the day a buch of us used to go taget shooting and rabbit hunting just outside of town. A friend hom on leve from the Navy produce a ruger super blackhawk .44 mag. And we all took a shot a some concrete blocks with it. The other gary in the group went first, big guy about 6'4" and 240 and the recoil broought the gun upto near verticle with him firing it one handed. I went next using both hands and a highly modified weaver grip with my left hand over the top of my right wrist. Recoil came up just a little less on me but I was 5'9 and 180 then. Roger at a whopping 135 and 5'6" decided if Gary #1 could do it one handed then so could he. Compunding this idiocy was the fact that he couldn't close his left eye without closing his right or nearly so so he held the pistol in his right hand and sighted with his left eye and when he shot the laws of physics meant the recoil caused the guns hammer to plant itself right between and a shade above his eyes knocking him to the ground. It's about size and competence not sex...
