Maine Mother Charged With Packing Pistol in Pants While Picking Children Up at School

While I totally agree that a sign only deters law abiding gun owners and CCW permit holder and it is ridiculous to think otherwise...it is still the law, and to remain law abiding we must be vigilant to obey it responsibly, even if we do not agree with it.

The real problem for her comes when the person who she filed the order of protection against, knowing she has armed herself follows her to the school, realizing she will be vulnerable there...just as many others have discovered.

Given the choice, the mother probably would prefer to be alive and brought up on charges than to be another statistic.

The woman made an error in judgement.

I applaude her for packing though, since here in Maine, woman who have taken out protection for abuse orders are OFTEN killed by the cretins they're trying to get away from.

A couple years back, one women who had returned to her former home with TWO POLICE ESCORTS was shot to death by the man she'd been trying to escape.

Yeah, that's right.

While these so-called cops stood around good old boying in sympathy with the guy that the woman had taken a court order out because he'd been beating her, that woman was SHOT right in front of their eyes.

So can you really BLAME that woman for taking steps NOT to victimized?

I can't.

Cops are often worthless when it comes to domestic violence.

They're often WORSE than worthless, since they're often are sympathetic to the men involved and assume that the woman is just being hysterical.

That attitude is changing, but not rapidly enough to suit me.

I agree 100%. Nobody (men or women) should count on anyone but themselves when it comes to protection.

Where this woman failed was to take the proper steps to educate herself. Concealed carry permits are available in Maine. Take a class and wait either 30 or 60 days for the license to show up. In that class, she would have been taught where she can and can't open/concealed carry.

Regardless if she took a class or not, carrying a weapon into a school is just foolish. Even if there isn't a sign posted, common sense should have kicked in.

But again, taking her side, we don't know if the guy she had the order against had just threatened her. Said he knew she was leaving soon and he would be there, etc.

Yes, she could have called the police to tell them about the call, but based on everything else, she probably thought (perhaps rightfully so) that she couldn't count on them to protect her.

So she took matters in her own hands. For that I say good for her.

LIke PolicitalChic said, charges are much better a result than being dead.

I worked in a jewelry store, and I went into the safe to get some diamonds. I felt around in the safe and found a plastic bag I thought were the diamonds. I grabbed the bag and realized I had a loaded .357 magnum pointed at my chest. One of the sales women had put her loaded gun in the safe. She told me sometimes her gun falls out of her purse at the supermarket.

Man that is so WILD... Once I worked at a Fish store and two guys came in and demanded all the CLAMS... So while they were loading up all the clams, I reached in the safe to retreive my Lawfully Stored Firearm to use in defense of my life and property only to discover that someone had replaced it with a bag of diamonds...

At which time the perpetrators made off with all the clams and a big bag of diamonds...

And all because my loaded Glock 23 .40 caliber semi-auotmatic clam stealin, diamond snatchin' theif killer was not where it could be of any use... I later found out that someone from Australia has stopped in and saw the gun while visiting with the boss and traded the diamonds for something more useful in a robbery... Ain't life funny?

We don't even have cops in my town after dark....i suppose they are on call???

state troopers do night duty i suppose, but they never make it around here that i know of....

In other words, she really would not have much protection without packing herself...again, i would not have brought it in to the school, not exposed like that, the car would have been a better spot, while picking up the kids, but FEAR played a role in her not thinking straight.

Hopefully the court will have mercy on her, with her circumstances taken in to consideration.

Ed and Divecon,

Did you hear about the woman last week in Belfast that killed her husband, who supposedly was abusing her?

TURNS OUT he was a neonazi, white supremecist who had all kinds of chemicals to make bombs and in vials he had nuclear waste, radio active nuclear waste.

I MISSED THIS ALTOGETHER on any local news....caught it on one of the 24/7 news channels 2 days ago!!! no one else has reported on it that i know of....?

Did EITHER YOU or Divecon hear anything about this home grown terrorist, amongst us in Belfast? The guy was a transplant from California, did not work, lived off of a huge inheritance from his father, who was also murdered....supposedly not related to the sons murder...but still!!!

He probably came here because we are a "mind your own business" type state....

This guy could have been the next timothy mcveigh and i DOUBT he was working alone!

Full blooded, American grown, terrorist, right among us!

LEWISTON, Maine — Police say a Lewiston woman is facing charges after showing up at an elementary school with a handgun tucked into the waistband of her pants.

Police say 30-year-old Tylor Austin had a 9 mm pistol when she walked into the principal's office at Montello Elementary School to pick up her three children Friday morning. She is charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

Lt. Mark Cornelio said Austin didn't make any threats and later told police she was carrying the gun for self-defense after taking out a protection order arising from a bad relationship. The school went into lockdown before police arrived. Nobody was hurt.

Pistol tucked into the waistband of her pants???

Hasn't anyone learned anything from Plaxico Burress?

And it being Maine (which is where I live)...and it being Lewiston (which is not where I live), the pistol was probably tucked into her tightly-stretched elastic waistband of her stained sweatpants and tucked high up under her large belly roll.

In fact, the pistol would have not injured anyone as the gunshot would have been fully absorbed by the massive gut overhang.

Yes, I heard of it the following day.

The question I keep asking myself, given that he already had low level radioactive material, is has he already spread any of it about?

The stuff he had DOES cause lung cancer if you get it into your lungs.

Of course, it might that cancer take a few years to manifest, but apparently its inevitable that you will get it.

If he was a NAZI, I could very easily see at least a few public targets for this sort of covert poisoning. The Belfast Coop, for example, might be just the kind of place since it is overrun with aging boomers who imagine themselves to be of the hip tribe.

I say ,imagine themselves, because most of the are really check chashing trustifarians and about as different from true hipdom as I think one can get.

But to the eye of the uniformed about what hipdom really is, those people would make ideal targets for covert poisoning by radioactive agents like he had in his possession.

I wonder if anyone is investigating whether or not the man has already been spreading his poison?

Frankly, I doubt it.

That would require imagination that I think our local posses do not have in great abundance.

We'll know, I suppose, a few years from now when there's an inexplicable epidemic of lung cancer around these parts.

I don't know this guy, but then I maintain an extremely low profile, nowadays, so I know less and less people in real life every year.

The better I know people, the more I like my dog.

That image kind of makes you question your heterosexuality, doesn't it?

Or...is it more like "That visual image is now burned into my memory...but I'd still hit it."?

i missed it all....didn't hear any of it except on rachel madow's show...they interviewed a local reporter who fell on to the case by accident, from just following the story from the ''wife kills abusive husband'' angle....

said it is like pulling teeth to get info, homeland security and fbi are involved and police are out of it....

The headlines could have easily have been this:

LEWISTON, Maine — Police say a Lewiston woman is dead after showing up at an elementary school.

Police say 30-year-old Tylor Austin was shot dead when she approached the door to Montello Elementary School to pick up her three children Friday morning. Tylor had a protection order out on the suspect who was standing by the entrance lying in wait to ambush her.

Lt. Mark Cornelio said that Austin who had a license to carry a gun for self-defense left her gun in the car. The school went into lockdown as Police searched for the suspect who later was gunned down in the parking lot after he pulled the gun on officers.
