CNSNews.com) - On Wednesday, only two days after he lifted President Bush’s executive order banning federal funding of stem cell research that requires the destruction of human embryos, President Barack Obama signed a law that explicilty bans federal funding of any "research in which a human embryo or embryos are destroyed, discarded, or knowingly subjected to risk of injury or death."

The provision was buried in the 465-page omnibus appropriations bill that Obama signed Wednesday. Known as the Dickey-Wicker amendment, it has been included in the annual appropriations bill for the Department of Health and Human Services every fiscal year since 1996.

tsk tsk tsk and a "oops"

I bet someone says its Bush's fault.

The new White House almost seems like a sitcom.

Too bad our country is in the middle of it.

OK can someone explain how he didn't "undo" the executive order?

I must be missing your point. He lifted the ban on federal funding for stem cell research which does NOT require the destruction of human embryos entirely ... then signed a ban of federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

The obvious: Adult stem cell research can still be federally funded.

Notable is the fact that even if Obama is doing something you agree with, taking a partisan shot at him trumps even THAT.

I sure hope someone is taking notes.. it's gonna take a lot of unscrewing of all this screwing up! :eusa_pray:

I thought we had this under Bush.

The way I read it,, he lifted a ban on federal funding of embryonic stell cell research then turned around and banned the federal funding on embryonic stem cell research.

Obama to reverse embryonic stem cell ban - CNN.com

I'm doing a 'quick read', working on redoing my lessons from the beginning of the year, been at it since 3 am.

This seems to be a reiteration of a trend of announcing one thing and quietly undoing it. The first in headlines, the qualifier coming later. Indeed though, I wouldn't have expected it on something like this; more foreign affiliated affairs.

Again, the conservatives try to trick us. Obama un-banned federal funding of research in embryonic stem cells. The sky's the limit and people can do whatever they want as far as research of these stem cells goes.

But in order to do the research, you must "kill" the embryo... so even these embryos would die anyway because they're from fertility clinics (of course the connies don't tell you that) the government cannot pay for their "destruction." That's basically federal funded "murder." The labs will have to destroy the embryos with their own money.

Of course you read it that way. You don't know anything about this, so you make up your own version of it.

The title of the CBS News article was misleading. The federal government can't be getting involved in killing the embryos. They are still doing ESCR though.

Seems fairly straight forward to me. He didn't make any mistake or error in signing both items.

When he lifted the ban on doing embryonic stem cell research that is what he did. He lifed the ban. How hard is that.

The second item where he says it wont't be federally funded.

In understanding the english language they are different directives. One allows research the second says the government will not pay for it. What is the problem?

Can't you be civil?

The import is that we are back where we were under President Bush. Any research would result in the destruction of these embryos, and this would infract Dickey-Wicker, so:
"The order went on to say: “The Secretary of Health and Human Services (Secretary), through the Director of NIH, may support and conduct responsible, scientifically worthy human stem cell research, including human embryonic stem cell research, to the extent permitted by law.”

Thanks to the Dickey-Wicker language in Section 509 of the omnibus bill, the "extent permitted by law" will continue to forbid federal funding of research that even puts embryos at risk."

As under President Bush, no research on stem cell embryos would be banned, simply not paid for with federal funds. Privately paid for reasearch has always gone on, but has not proven to be fruitful. Thus private funds are not funnelled to this research.

It seems to me that our President is a believer in this type of research, so either there will be a separate bill to fund same, or he will try to repeal Dickey-Wicker.

BTW, the embryos in question are the sole property of the donors, and as such, will be disposed of or used as they see fit.

You misunderstand. It was never banned, this is a Democrat talking point.

obamalama with great fanfare and cheering from the left,, signed a bill that reversed the ban on federal funding that Bush had put into effect.. thereby allowing federal funding for research on embryonic stem cell research.. yay,, and even Nancy Reagan approved to the great fanfare of the left and with much applause...

now

two days later in signing the 410 Billion dollar omnibus bill obamalama inadvertanly signed a bill that stated there will be no federal funding of embyronic stem cell research!

now,, is this A correct interpretation of the article above or is it not.? I hate to be so dense but there it is????

Adult stem cell research was not banned. Enbryonic stem cell research was. Now it is not banned but it will not be funded. I don't much care about the Dems since I stand firmly in the socialist corner.
