If you've ever read the books by Ian Fleming, the character of James Bond has left the original intent a LOOOOOONG time ago.

The difference is, Elementary isn't supposed to be a retelling of Sherlock Holmes, but of someone today that has similarities with the fictional Sherlock. It's as if, no one in this entire series has ever heard of Sherlock Holmes or Arthur Conan Doyle. Will Smith playing James West had as much relevance to James West as Woody Allen had to James Bond when he made Casino Royale. It was a spoof. Now if someone wants to make a comedy spoof of James Bond with a black pratfaller playing Bond, go to it. Chris Rock would be an ideal Bond.

James Bond is an iconic British literary figure. But if you want another example, let's see Spike cast white girl to play Celie in a remake of "The Color Purple".

I think it depends on the character.
For example, a Black Wonder Woman might actually work with someone like Beyonce who has a strong attitude
and can pull something like that off.

I hate when movies deliberately try to make the genius engineer or doctor "black" to show diversity
and that character/actor/actress just doesn't pull it off believably.

I agree that when it's only for show, it can ruin the movie by having zero credibility and just trying to appease public expectations.

Both the character, and the person playing the role, should have consistent authentic spirit and credibility
and I wouldn't see people complaining.

Same with getting someone marketably popular and cute, like Katie Holmes playing a tough DA in a city like Gotham,
where someone that young is not likely to have gotten that far (unless she pulled strings, which also went against her character as a highly conscionable person, thus unlikely to have gotten into the DA's office with politics as they are)
and was obviously set up by the casting and marketing folks in movieland.

Not credible, and ruins that role, regardless of race or gender.
