Decriminalizing prostitution linked to fewer STDs and rapes UCLA

"Key findings from the study show that there were 31 percent or 824 fewer reported rapes and a decrease of approximately 2000 cases of gonorrhea during the seven years indoor prostitution was decriminalized. The authors note that the results suggest that “decriminalization could have potentially large social benefits for the population at large — not just sex market participants.”"

Legalized Prostitution Regulating the Oldest Profession

"There are many benefits to legalized prostitution. The benefits include (1) allowing law enforcement agencies to respond to more important crimes, (2) freeing justice systems from nuisance cases, (3) helping women who are trapped by prostitution, and (4) preventing teens from being ensnared into prostitution.

When data from countries that ban prostitution is compared with data from countries that do not, many startling discoveries can be observed. Countries without anti-prostitution laws have less murders, less rapes, and prosecute/imprison less people. HIV/AIDS is less of a problem; suicide rates are lower as are divorce rates, too. "

"Key findings from the study"?

Hey Delta4Embassy
Why not legalize prostitution (and drugs) in an agreement to
mandate spiritual healing for anyone who has been reported to be abusive, addictive, or at risk of endangering themselves or others. Same with gun rights or marriage rights -- mandate that any person wanting these rights must go through screening and spiritual healing to make sure
they are not suffering from any abusive or addictive condition where they would abuse sex, drugs, guns, etc.

That would ALSO reduce crime, violence, addictions, abuse, rape, murder, physical and mental illness, etc.

How about mandating that?
Think we could make a trade off?

If legal prostitution was good enough for our Forefathers, It's good enough for modern man...and woman.....

1st link in the OP talked about Rhode Island, which some how decriminalized prostitution for 7 years. During that 7 years, rapes went down, STIs went down, and a host of other benefits.

Where pornography is available, sex crimes go down. Yet the US seems to be an exception, or, rapes are being reported more often now. In any event, rape is a global problem needing a fix. If legalizing prostitution results in less rapes, as it seems to do, legalize prostitution.

According to RAINN, about two-thirds of rapes go unreported. Of the third that are, only about 2% result in the rapist doing any prison time. That's unacceptable.

Should write Republican bumperstickers for a living.

Exactly. In fact, hookers often get raped.

Rape is not a crime of sex. It's a crime of violence. Some categories of rape might go down. But not rape. There will still be violent rape and there will still be date rape.

This is an interesting study but the findings are far from definitive.

The state did not formally legalize prostitution, and the decriminalization was not publicized until the loophole was actually eliminated. There is no indication whether the enforcing agencies were even aware of the loophole while it existed. There is no indication that the general public (i.e., potential "Johns") was even aware of the change, so how would one suppose that behavior changed as a result of the decriminalization? And remember, we are talking about the behavior of prostitutes' clients and potential rapists.

Does anyone seriously think that a potential rapist is going to decide to see a hooker rather than rape someone? It seems extremely unlikely to me.

There is a state that legalized prostitution decades ago, and continues to have adjacent communities where prostitution is legal in one and illegal in another. THAT's where you go if you want to gather relevant data on prostitution.

Dear Delta-person: "...less rapes" Bad. "...fewer rapes." Good. If the item in question is discrete and can be counted, use "fewer."

I looked up the numbers and the conclusions are dishonest. Rape statistics in Rhode Island in the 90's were relatively stable at 273 in 1995, 267-1996 and 287 in 1997. Rape statistics spiked to 505 in 2002 and then stabilized to around 320 down to 282 during the years specified. In other words the opinions of the women who wrote the analysis were based on the unusual spike in 2002 but the rape statistics stayed relatively the same or slightly higher than they were before the prostitution law was passed.
