Sen. Mitch McConnell claimed recently that the Keystone XL Pipeline ‘doesn’t require a penny of our taxpayer money all the president has to do is approve it.’ But our research reveals many places that the pipeline project benefits from many taxpayer subsidies.

The refineries that are linked to the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline as committed shippers will receive between $1 billion and $1.8 billion in tax breaks. They are paid specifically for investing in equipment to process the heavy sour oil the pipeline promises to deliver.

No wonder oil company profits are so obscenely high. You pay them when you fill up and when you fill out. Why don’t we add further insult to injury while we’re at it?

The largest of these refineries, Motiva, is half owned by Saudi Refining Inc., and will receive between $680,000 and $1.1 billion in U.S. taxpayer support.

Saudi, you say? So much for that whole “ethical oil” idiocy.

Keystone XL, like all oil industry projects, is enabled by substantial taxpayer subsidies. Three of the refineries that are planning to process the pipeline’s oil have invested in special equipment to handle the extra heavy tar sands oil. According to our conservative estimates, the U.S. taxpayer is subsidizing these investments to the tune of $1.0-1.8 billion. Here’s how it works.

Now you know why the GOP whines like stuck pigs about subsidies for renewable energy:

Look! Squirrel! Pay no attention to the big oil foreign conglomerates sucking at the government teat, and John Boehner’s substantial investments in said conglomerates!

OIL profits aren't obscenly high the Gubmint makes more off of oil than the companies themselves through taxation. WHY do you lie?

Just the repubs huh?

We havent forgotten that Rahms apartment was paid for by BP, you remember that company that democrats walked past the safety concerns in court. Polluted the gulf etc.........

KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE IS A SCAM

The 1700 mile Canadian Keystone XL Pipeline from Canada to Texas is a scam by a private foreign company on Americans. All the company’s supplies use to build the pipeline will be made in China. Not by US companies. The pipeline ending in Texas will supply Canadian oil to China, India, etc. Why would we need a 1700 mile pipeline from Canada to Texas to get oil from Canada? When we don’t need a pipeline to get oil from the middle east? The Canadian Keystone XL Pipeline is the biggest foreign scam ever on Americans. Oil prices will go up and it is not worth the jobs it would create. If the pipeline was built by American with American made supplies by an American firm, it would be worth considering. Otherwise it is a scam and what is in this pipeline for the radical right wingers? Who is paying the pipeline workers, Canada or US?
The Keystone SL pipeline is a scam and not worth the jobs it would create.

The politicians pushing the pipeline are (how can I put this politely?) lying to the American people and pandering for dirty oil money. What do we really stand to gain if this thing is rammed down our throats? Higher gas prices, more air pollution, the threat of poisoned water, and enough carbon pollution to make stopping climate disruption next to impossible -- but few of the jobs and none of the huge profits that Big Oil would reap.

The Keystone XL pipeline will not reduce America's dependence on Middle East oil, or do anything to get us off oil completely, which is key to America's national security future. Much of the oil produced by Keystone won't go right to American gas-tanks -- it is to be exported, meaning we will need to import oil the same as before.

Michael Brune: The Keystone XL Pipeline Scam
The author of your little screed is the executive director of the Sierra Club. Axe to grind much?

I'd just like to know how many jobs is enough for the left to actually give a shit about. They want to create jobs they say, but this pipeline doesn't create enough, supposedly. If you're the one getting a job out of this, it makes a huge difference. And isn't one less person drawing unemployment a good thing?

Not expecting a response out of the idiotic OP, so I guess this is a rhetorical question ...

Could one be any more Brain Washed and Ignorant as this?

Tip - stop Reading and Believing only Known Left wing, Enviro Wacko sites. Do try and get some Perspective. Keystone could be the Most important Pipeline in the History of the Earth, It could be the Safest, and most Profitable Ever, and those Left wing Wackos would still oppose it.

How the F could a left winger say that the Oil Pipeline is a scam when the Iran crisis is causing gas to go up to $4.00 per gal? The pipeline is everything a failed administration could want to jump start the economy. You have guaranteed construction jobs, industries that support construction and oil supply during a time when there is instability in the Mid-East for the next 20 years. What does the left hate about it?

Priceofoil.org?

Seriously??

Oil Change International is run by people whose previous organizations include Friends of the Earth, Worldwatch Institute, Greenpeace, and the Sierra Club, among others.

Now go take your lithium and sit your ass back down, fuckwit.

Oil companies make very slim margins, less than most companies... they're volume based. The biggest factor in rising prices is the deterioration of the U.S. Dollar. Thanks Barry!!!

It's interesting. Every time I ask a lib why they didn't go crazy over Phase I or Phase II, I never get an answer.

And I honestly have never seen more bullshit from eco weenies than on the Keystone. (not including the global warming freaks because they fall into a religious category beyond eco whackism)

Someone earlier in the thread said the pipeline needed to go to Texas to ship oil to South America.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

The loony left aren't just shovelling shit, they need a front end loader to handle the piles of fecal matter they post.

What a bunch of tripe. The link shows no references supporting their bullshit (and neither do you for that matter).

What's more pathetic than that website is there are actually folks stupid enough to believe it.

And as Iran rachets up the rhetoric, gets ready to ramp it's Nuclear reactors...

Obama is talking of unilaterally cutting US Warheads by 80%

At the moment, I'm glad NYS is being careful about fracking while Penn. is trucking in more and more water for people to drink....

The dittoheads in a huge rush, don't care what experts say, just Rush and Mitch- reminds me of Iraq...how'd that work out?

Keystone has been in the works since 2006. Phase I and Phase II are completed. Phase III and Phase IV are up on deck.

But you don't want to know the truth, you just want to pontificate and be a blowhard name caller with absolutely not one original thought in your head.

With all due respect your comment is as wild as Pelosi claiming that "we can't drill our way to oil independence",

You should educate yourself on the issue. Keystone I and II that run to Illinois and to Oklahoma have been highly successful endeavors.

Community relations is part of Keystone's tradition as it has worked with interested parties in nine U.S. states to engage local communities along the Keystone pipeline route since 2006.

Through community meetings and outreach endeavours, Keystone has been able to engage and maintain good relations with more than 5,000 landowners and thousands of community residents affected by the project.

The next phase for the Keystone Pipeline system is the proposed U.S. Gulf Coast Expansion (Keystone XL) project.

Once approved, TransCanada is poised to put 20,000 Americans to work to construct the pipeline - pipe fitters, welders, mechanics, electricians, heavy equipment operators, the list goes on.

Local businesses along the pipeline route will benefit from the 118,000 spin-off jobs Keystone XL will create through increased business for local restaurants, hotels and suppliers.

More than $5 billion in property taxes that TransCanada expects to pay over the lifetime of the project would allow counties in States along the pipeline route to invest in new schools, roads and hospitals.

In total, the Keystone XL project is expected to create $20 billion of economic benefits to the U.S. during construction.

In Kansas, an independent report prepared by The Perryman Group outlined during construction the pipeline would:

Lead to $683 million in new spending for the Kansas economy;
Increase personal income by $376 million; and
Increase state and local tax revenues by more than $17 million.

The study further concluded that once the pipeline is operational, Kansas could see more than $531 million in property taxes to county and other local governments during the operating life of the pipeline - money that could be used to build new roads, schools and hospitals.
