Breathing rarified air.
UNC has been busted passing athletes with fake African American studies classes. Why pretend they are there to get an education and that they are being accepted as student athletes instead of revenue generators for the universities? if they do want an education put them on scholarship and pay them a modest salary. if the dont want an education pay them a salary based on their ability to generate revenue for the school. What say you?

UNC athletics report finds 18 years of academic fraud - CNN.com

For 18 years, thousands of students at the prestigious University of North Carolina took fake "paper classes," and advisers funneled athletes into the program to keep them eligible, according to a scathing independent report released Wednesday.

"These counselors saw the paper classes and the artificially high grades they yielded as key to helping some student-athletes remain eligible," Kenneth Wainstein wrote in his report.

I really don't understand why they still allow slavery in the US..They should pay the athletes and take away the scholarships...

They are being paid. Pick any school, add up 4 years of tuition, books, lodging, food, etc., and whatever it totals is what the non-scholarship folks at that school have to fork over for what the atheletes are exchanging their services for.

That's the deal they sign up for and nobody puts a gun to the athletes' heads to do so.

Interesting.

Russell Wilson went to UNC and now he is being complained about not being Black Enough.

Sounds like he missed that African American class.

They are getting paid, it's called a college degree. If they don't want to take advantage of a free education worth tens of thousands of dollars, I have no sympathy for them.

He went to NC St.

Ain't no way U Mart throws in the towel and truly changes a thing considering how much money they make with things the way they are. Same reason it took so long to shake the bowl issue -- which hasn't really been shaken at all but has significantly expanded.

Wilson went to NC St. Who is complaining he is not Black enough and what does that have to do with the thread?

No thats called a perk. Paid means you are doing a job...(bringing in big bank for the universities) and they pay you for it in money.

If it was getting paid they wouldnt call it a college degree. Paid means money not certificates saying you were trained to work for someone else.

Wallow in semantics all you want, but they're getting for free what non-scholarship students have to pay money for. And that's what they agreed to when they signed on the dotted line accepting their scholarships.

scholarship

I'm not arguing what they agreed to do. I'm saying in the future (starting now) they should be paid a salary or have the option of a scholarship and a stipend. Its a joke to call them student athletes when a lot of them are not. They are hired guns.

Pay them. And next year in early August, on a Saturday, have all the football players in every college and uni in the country, have the opportunity to sign autographs for money.

Then defy the NCAA to punish anyone, or there will be a player strike.

The NCAA and schools will back down instantly.

The people truly getting screwed in this are the taxpayers. We subsidize most of these institutions on the state and federal level and they use the brand as a marketing tool to raise hundreds of millions for their little athletics slush department and its overpaid coaches. We're essentially stockholders in the enterprise but we get no dividends. When a university can spend $12K at a time for each batch of different football helmets just to help sell the franchise to future players then we have a monster that needs to be reigned in.

So what would a pay for play system look like ? All players making the same wage regardless of position or school ?
Would it be individual contracts according to their ability ?

Depends on the income. They should make a percentage of the proceeds if they are big time players. If they wish to truly be student athletes then a scholarship and a stipend dependent on cost of living for the area.
