Judicial Watch Releases Special Report: "The Rebranding of ACORN"

The ACORN-affiliated groups existing today are ACORN in all but name. These groups tend to occupy ACORN’s former offices, are staffed in many cases with former ACORN employees, and remain committed to ACORN’s corrupt mission.

Our investigation has documented 17 ACORN-affiliated organizations in the following states/regions: Arizona, Arkansas, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New England, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington.

Among the conclusions of Judicial Watch’s special report, which you can access by clicking here:

ACORN lives on in the form of numerous state entities and in such affiliated organizations as Affordable Housing Centers of America (AHCOA), The Advance Group, The Black Institute, and Project Vote. In the words of Bertha Lewis, former chief executive officer of ACORN, “[T]hese entities are carrying on ACORN’s work of organizing low- and moderate-income folks… [We have created] bullet-proof community-organizing Frankensteins that they’re going to have a very hard time attacking.”

Tens of millions of dollars in ACORN’s funds and other assets are still unaccounted for. The Louisiana attorney general’s office and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, as well as Judicial Watch, continue to investigate what happened to these missing resources.

Judicial Watch discovered that the Obama administration continues to bankroll ACORN and its affiliates in defiance of the federal government’s funding ban. As I’ve documented in this space, on March 1, 2011, ACORN Housing Corporation ─ renamed Affordable Housing Centers of America (though it retained the same headquarters and many of the ACORN officers) ─ received a $79,819 grant from the Obama Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

ACORN’s Project Vote, President Obama’s former employer, remains active in registering voters on public assistance to re-elect Obama and other leftist candidates. In Colorado, for instance, Judicial Watch uncovered documents proving that ACORN/Project Vote successfully pressured Colorado officials into implementing new policies for increasing the registration of public assistance recipients during the 2008 and 2010 election seasons. After the policy changes, the percentage of fraudulent voter registration forms from Colorado public assistance agencies was four times the national average. (Evidence also suggests that the Obama Justice Department might be partnering with Project Vote in this campaign.)

At its peak, ACORN had over 400,000 members and 1,200 chapters in more 100 cities. Linked to serious scandals involving the misuse of taxpayer funds, embezzlement, intimidation tactics, employee abuse, questionable hiring tactics, and fraudulent voter registrations, ACORN’s corrupt activities finally caught the attention of the American public and members of Congress. Of course the final blow came in the form of explosive journalist videos showing ACORN employees advising undercover reporters on how to evade taxes, as well as immigration, housing, and child prostitution laws.

After the videos “went viral” in October 2009, Congress passed and Barack Obama signed into law the Defund ACORN Act which effectively prohibited the federal government from funding “ACORN and any ACORN-related affiliate.” ACORN subsequently filed for bankruptcy on November 2, 2010.

As we document in our report, however, long before its bankruptcy filing ACORN’s leadership implemented a plan to ensure the survival of ACORN as independent state corporations and affiliated organizations. The Judicial Watch report provides details on the individual organizations and their officers.

Intense, do Andrew Breitbart and Judge Napolitano pay you to direct so much traffic to their sites?

Do you really need to post every single story on "Big Government" in this thread?

No.

I do need to keep an eye on ACORN Spawn. It's my current Mission from God. :D
You didn't ask if the Post was Timely and Relevant to the related conversation, which it was, Doc. Get your mind out of the gutter, you'll feel better. :):):)
I feel that I need to remind you that you are not my Keeper.

The extent that you guys just simply don't understand how things work boggles the mind. This vision of ACORN as the boogeyman is hilarious to me.

The Soviet kommisars always told their fellow citizens not to be afraid of their government, that it was only concerned about their welfare. They even told that to the inmates in the Gulags.

Nationwide, ACORN had thousands of staff.

There have been 5 or 6 that have been caught "on the wrong side of the law".

I think that's a better ratio than most police departments.

"Nothing to see here, folks. Move along."

ACORN, and It's Spawn, the more money they scam us out of, the greater the Deficit. They not only add to it, they multiply it. The more they do, the more the rest of us suffer.

It's taken long enough, but this article appeared in the Washington Examiner on January 20, 2012:

Justice Department Coordinates Suits With ACORN's Project Vote

The corruption just never seems to end. From the article:

President Obama -- who was employed by Project Vote as a community organizer early in his career -- and Attorney General Eric Holder have no qualms about working closely with present and former ACORN and Project Vote operatives on voter registration drives aimed at people on public assistance. Take, for example, an April 2009 letter to deputy assistant attorney general Sam Hirsh from former ACORN attorney and current Project Vote director of advocacy Estelle Rogers. She described preparations for a subsequent meeting about Department of Justice plans concerning National Voter Registration Act litigation in states deemed not being sufficiently aggressive in registering public assistance recipients. Among those to be included in the meeting, according to the Rogers letter, were Nicole Kovite, director of the public agency project for Project Vote; Spencer Overton, deputy assistant attorney general for legal policy; Cecilia Munoz, then-director of intergovernmental affairs in the Obama White House; and Tino Cuellar, special assistant to the president for justice and regulatory policy. Munoz was recently promoted to chief domestic advisor to Obama. Other letters obtained by Judicial Watch from Rogers to high-ranking Justice Department officials include a March 2011 missive to associate attorney general Thomas Perrelli, about a document she forwarded to him "for improvement" after a previous meeting on NVRA litigation. The letters also show that during the 2010 election cycle Project Vote used the threat of NVRA suits by the DOJ to pressure officials in Missouri, Ohio, Indiana, Georgia and New Mexico to change policies and procedures to facilitate voter registration among public assistance recipients. Federal NVRA suits were filed last year by the DOJ against Rhode Island and Louisiana after officials there balked at changing their registration policies and procedures.

Given ACORN/Project Vote's extensive links to voter registration fraud schemes across the country, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa of California might want to ask Holder about these matters on Feb. 2 when the attorney general appears before the panel.

So what should the Attorney Gen. be asked?

However they market themselves, public unions are political by nature, brimming partisanship that goes beyond their skewed campaign spending. Every Republican teacher, public safety worker, and government employee forced to pay “fair share” dues should be outraged.

My state’s National Education Association (NEA) affiliate, the Ohio Education Association (OEA), takes millions in fees from non-members each year. Operating on NEA’s model, OEA insists all teachers be forced to pay for the union’s non-political business. This would be well and good, if OEA conducted any non-political business.

From the union’s mission statement:

OEA believes that for those whose business is public education, activism is an obligation.

OEA has the same definition of “activism” as every garden variety leftist group: Demand bigger government under the guise of fairness and equality. For example, ACORN’s 2005-06 Political Program (hat tip: Publius’ Forum) lists OEA as a “Coalition Partner” -

We see the combination of these efforts as key to maintaining and expanding the level of electoral participation by more progressive voters in the state, along with playing a role in pushing voter alignment along axes of community concerns and economic security.

In other words, OEA worked with ACORN to push the entitlement mindset and get entitlement-minded voters to the polls. For… the children?

More recently, OEA was listed as a state partner of “Health Care for America NOW” (a lobbying group devoted to socialized medicine) and the Ohio Voter Fund (a coalition of leftists against voter ID).

NEA and its state affiliates are enthusiastic cheerleaders for Keynesian deficit spending, though I wouldn’t want the task of finding a math teacher who insists one minus two equals jobs!

Oh, I don't know...... How about... "How much for a Happy Ending Massage? :D

How about a State by State breakdown for Money's paid to or through ACORN for Fraudulent Voter Registration and the Clean Up costs? How many of these same practices are continuing today?

Some criminal scholars think that for every crime in which the criminal is caught and convicted, 99 others do not get caught, much less convicted. That said, voting irregularities came up in more than a score of states against ACORN for carrying out vote schemes to get soft-on-crime candidates, not to mention people convicted of crimes, elected to high public office. Congress is not place to fund criminality, and if voting is made into a sham, we're letting criminals dictate laws that favor getting themselves re-elected with similar cronies instead of true pro-American people candidates.

Why even have a vote if one party is determining through statistics how many votes to demand of from precinct chairmen to put illegal votes in that amount plus some to agree with false pictures painted by insider "polling icons" who fell to partisan dirty tricks by collaborating with those determined to take away real results just to get their own criminals placed in positions from which they may be controlled or their FBI files exposed to the public.

Powerful weapons in the hands of criminals who ran the reformed ACORN by 30 different new names and all on the Fed take on account of built-in guarantees by their party, stuck in bills as add-ons and amendments to poison the well for their political opponents who feel they must vote to get what the bill is stated to do.

Congress is getting to be a danger to itself and others, through corruption.

John Atlas: ACORN Vindicated of Wrongdoing by the Congressional Watchdog Office

Yeah. That carries so much weight.

I bet Congress cannot even find an Illegal at a Home Depot. ;)

If Congress said it, it must be true. ;)

Why are you so keen on them grilling AG Holder, then?

I think there is a place for Congress, I think Congress is lost in the woods and needs to find it's way back to it's prime directive. Government by the People, for the People, and of the People. Part of that is to Establish Justice and Maintain it without Favoritism or Partiality. Whatever is out of compliance or has outlived it's usefulness should be Studied, Reviewed and Repealed. The Books need to be cleaned up.

ACORN Was a Splinter Group that has diversified and hidden it's spawn all over our Nation. These groups are not about Public Interest. They use Federal Funding in the Billions to Influence their Recipients, Dependents, to further their agenda, their platform, which is in part redistribution in a way that is outright theft, they do undermine the Political System, using the money of their victims (Anyone with Equity) , they disrupt the flow of commerce, they are most responsible for the National Debt, by providing levels of Entitlement that we cannot nor could ever afford. Your Utopia is unattainable, no matter how hard you try to bankrupt the system. The only thing you will succeed in, in the end is catastrophic loss of life. Mass graves. Again, and again, and again. People need to be free. That does not happen without regard to Private Property. It does not happen when you Censor and squash decent because it is not your brand.

Holder is Incompetent. He needed to go a long time ago.

No. Congress in Theory, serves a purpose. Government by the consent of the Governed. ACORN was a run away spending train. It's spawn have multiplied by design, effect, and damage. Fuck off with your bullshit, running cover for corruption. Totalitarian Fuck that you are.

In tactics similar to ones used by a former ACORN group in New York City during the Occupy Wall Street movement, a Chicago-based not-for-profit paid people to attend protests that backed the closing of public schools.

Two of the “rent-a-protestors” reportedly blew the whistle on the Hope Organization, claiming that they were offered money to attend the rallies back on Jan. 6 and that they were provided with pre-made signs and prepared scripts.

Both men told the Chicago Sun-Times that they didn’t realize the intent of the rally, supporting the closure of certain schools, until the last minute. Thaddeus Scott, 35, says he was promised $50 dollars to speak at the rally, which he was told was “for schools.” He says he was stiffed $25 after the head of the Hope organization, the Rev. Roosevelt Watkins III, complained that Scott had publicly revealed that he was compensated for speaking at the hearing.

“I don’t want the $25 he [Watkins] owes me. He can keep his dirty money,” Scott told the Sun-Times. “They thought for a few dollars they could get us to say whatever they want. ... We were preyed upon.”

Watkins tells the Sun-Times that protesters were paid to attend “training” sessions on “community organizing.”

NY Communities for Change members and Hempstead homeowners symbolically reclaimed several vacant homes during a march in Hempstead on Saturday, in a particularly hard-hit neighborhood for foreclosures in Nassau. The marchers – homeowners facing foreclosure, neighbors sick of vacant properties destroying their community, and NY Communities for Change members – called on the banks to stop destroying communities by foreclosing on homes.

The march of some 40 people, which went down Carolina Ave, highlighted the devastating effects foreclosed homes have on neighborhoods like Hempstead, and why it is better for community members to have control of those properties. Hempstead is one of the villages that was most affected by foreclosures in the New York State.

"If people in the community fight to stop these foreclosure we can prevent the banks from destroying our communities," said NY Communities for Change member Maribel Toure, from whose house the march commenced. "My street alone has two foreclosures on it, one around the corner and two more on the next street. These were parents in our schools, community leaders and friends that we lost.”
