The US spends more on military every year than the next 8 countries combined. It also states that 20% of Federal spending is on defense. This table shows the amount of money spent on defense for the past 20 years. In 2010 19% of the US's budget was allocated to defense and 28% of tax revenues went to defense. The US defense budget accounts for 40% of the world's arms spending.
Not too much will say republicans.
It's enough will say Dems.
But WE will be paying more!!!

Perhaps if we stopped selling our old weapons to people that might be our next enemy. And maybe if we didn't allow Military Weapons Contractors to donate to political parties (They are top donors to every candidate).

The dividends to the general public are scant. Money spent on repair and installation of infrastructure are the investments that repay the public and even the manufacturers in lower costs to ship and get where we might want to go within the nation at lower cost. Power transmission costs can be radically lowered by upgrading as well as water and sewer handling methods. The best investment could be education as that is where our engineers and scientists come from. Keeping ahead in the development of technology is important, much more important than blowing things up.

I am not going to try to defend the chipping away of true history by changing the definitions steadily until what was once THIS is now THAT. The politicians and those with agendas vilify something and get enough assistance by the peanut gallery to morph and in some cases outright flip terms to mean the exact opposite of what they originally represented.

Mussolini coined the word "fascisimo" and Hitler being impressed with the way it was used as a tool to streamline his government's ability to get things done. This was VERY important for the Italians as they had a reputation, well deserved, for a general lack of co-operation at almost every level. Mussolini's genius was to bypass the normal means of assigning jobs for bid and just arranged for no-bid contracts to the manufacturers and trades that would play ball with him politically. He bragged openly as only an Italian can do that he had developed this "Fascisimo" of co-operation. At the time it was invented no one considered it evil.

What made the term "fascist" easy to vilify was HOW it was used during the war years to allow projects to be accomplished that later were exposed as a means to rid Hitler of the people in the countries he conquered that would not add to the positive outcome he insisted upon. That was obviously to displace or outright murder dissidents and those thought inferior. Nothing about the actual fascism was particularly wrong except the projects were easy to conceal from the public. Most of the inhabitants in Hitlers swath of destruction didn't even know about the death camps and other institutional aspects of his reign of terror.
