Theobald Wolfe Tone, posthumously known as Wolfe Tone (20 June 1763 – 19 November 1798), was a leading Irish revolutionary figure and one of the founding members of the United Irishmen, and is regarded as the father of Irish republicanism and leader of the 1798 Irish Rebellion. He was captured at Letterkenny port on 3 November 1798, and he died sixteen days later for reasons that are disputed (source of information: Wikipedia).

It is believed by many that Tone committed suicide while in prison. This suicide rumor was even depicted in the haunting Walter C. Mills painting The Death of Wolfe Tone.

We know that the modern age is marked by globalization which arguably really began during the age of European colonialism (not during the era of the Vikings as some historians claim!) after sea travel really took off. Globalization became more sophisticated during the advent of computers and cyber-networking. Now, capitalism's reach is marked by institutions such as Wall Street, NASDAQ, European Union, the World Bank, and NATO.

Globalization has also been marred and destabilized by immigration-related crimes and of course terrorism.

After 9/11, the world really woke up to the fact that not everyone was 'thrilled' with commerce-engaged globalization, and the Middle East continues to harbor mistrust towards the West's treatment of commerce-oriented Israel-Palestine politics.

Terrorism has seen many faces, and independence movements have sometimes involved armed violent conflict which has been presented as 'terrorism' by the oppressive governments holding authority. Some of these terrorism claims are not unfounded, as some 'freedom-fighters' have engaged in questionable tactics (e.g., targeting of civilian targets, torture, etc.).

The IRA (Irish Republican Army) has long been a geopolitical symbol of nation-unification uncertainties. The Irish have been unhappy with the governance of Great Britain, and many Irish-Catholics still profess that there is undesirable oppression by British-Protestants in Northern Ireland!

Mills' painting of the suicide of Irish revolutionary Wolfe Tone symbolizes to many Irish patriots the notion that geopolitical negotiation in modern times must involve a serious contemplation of the uncertainties regarding culture-conflicts arising during commerce-oriented culture-exchange (e.g., European Union).

Can sports help? The 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang (South Korea) saw a much-needed (if temporary) alliance between democratic South Korea and incendiary neighbour North Korea (involved in multiple nuclear-missile test controversies in recent times).

Perhaps the right kinds of sports-journalism and creative thinking (e.g., art) can help bring attention to the 'human problems' associated with globalization (which are arguably as symbolic as 'political problems').

What will the Trump Administration do (given that Trump is considered such as 'capitalism diplomat')? That is really the question of the era.

In the meantime, enjoy some Baileys Irish Cream on St. Patrick's Day(!).

"Wolfe Tone is dead,
Why you ask...

The Irish are 'trouble,'
and so they say (and say!).

Where is the government?
Where are the toys(!)?

Wolfe Tone is dead,
suicide the cause, we believe (in God),

The politician is our sword,
but the graves remain our prayer..."
