If Nixon had chosen Barry Goldwater, instead of Gerald Ford, to replace Spiro Agnew.

People tend to forget about Reagan until the 1980's for some reason, but he was also a beneficiary of Buckley's purge and more acceptable than Goldwater outside the Party loyalists.

They also forget that while Governor he had a reputation for compromise, and even doing things that he was against, because "the will of the people" spoke.

He signed into law sweeping abortion bills and others, saying as he did so he was against it but he was not going to go against the wishes of the people of the state. And he even had a good relationship with the Democrats in the state, a far cry from the adversarial positions both parties take today.

Hell, he even appointed Democrats into key parts of his administration, including the Secretary of the Navy.

How would history have changed if Richard Nixon had chosen Barry Goldwater to replace Spiro Agnew, assuming Barry Goldwater had accepted? Would the left have even bothered with Watergate?

Barry Goldwater never would have been confirmed under the 25th Amendment by a Democratic Congress. Jerry Ford got the job because he was acceptable to all sides.

I am certainly no fan of Nixon's. If I had been 18 in 1968, I would have voted for Humphrey. But, as the smoke has cleared and more evidence has become available, it is now obvious that Nixon got a very raw deal in Watergate and that the main charge against him--the charge that convinced the grand jury to name him as a co-consipirator--was bogus. Nixon did not authorize the hush-money payment to Howard Hunt, and many of the legal maneuverings against him were grossly unethical.

Sweet Mormon Jesus, Mike, are you fucking serious?

Nixon is caught on tape, RED HANDED, conspiring to break the law.

The ironic thing is, if you take out Watergate, Nixon was a pretty good president. If you take out Lewinsky, Clinton was a pretty good president.

If you take out Ukraine and Storming the Capitol... Trump was still a shitty president, but some of you just can't admit to a mistake.

An incredible embarrassment for the Republic! That era was an unprecedented catastrophe. Only "W" and the Bush League rival the errors and damage.
