How long before they stop playing the Anthem at sporting events?

You must love MLB then where you get two for the price of admission. You get the national anthem before the game and you also get god bless America during the 7th inning stretch.

Not only that, but in Boston we get Sweet Caroline most nights too.

Not sure why we should stop. As long as there is a topic of any sort, there will be those who are “pro” and those who are “con”. I personally like the custom and think it should continue.

We should stop the ridiculous military aircraft flyovers, paratroopers, etc… This is dangerous stuff and we shouldn’t be so cavalier about risking the lives of our best and brightest to make some people cheer in a stadium.

In fact, I think the honor guard should walk off the field, respectfully stow the colors, and be escorted by home team officials to the owners box to enjoy the game if they wish. They and their families.

NOW THAT WOULD BE A GREAT CUSTOM TO START. Give Sergeant Jones and his wife and kids a great seat for the game.

I was in the Honor Guard a million and a half years ago. We got to post colors at 49er games and then would get to sit on the sidelines...which is WAY better than the owners box.

FUN FACT:

Our "National Anthem" is only the first verse of the a much longer and somewhat boring song The Star Spangled Banner.

O! say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation.
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Most Americans couldn't explain the meaning of the lyrics - what specifically is he talking about.

Great. But there is a way of saying “thank you” to troops that is perhaps not as “good” in terms of vantage points and atmosphere but somehow seen as a greater value….if that makes any sense.

I mean, for the NFL, what would one luxury box cost per game? Fifty grand or so? That is $400,000 during the regular season. Probably close to the league minimum salary. You run it through a 501 and you can write it off even.

I like what the Washington Spirit did last night in order to prevent Megan Rapinoe from taking a knee.
They played the Anthem BEFORE the players took the field.

NWSL's Washington Spirit prevent Megan Rapinoe's anthem protest

“In light of Seattle Reign and U.S. Women’s National Team member Megan Rapinoe’s public declaration that she intended to ‘take a knee’ during the United States’ National Anthem tonight, we decided to play the anthem in our stadium ahead of schedule rather than subject our fans and friends to the disrespect we feel such an act would represent,” the team said in a statement.

It scares them THAT much, eh? Symbolic gestures can be powerful.

I know it will never happen but I think it would be a good idea to mix it up and have the Star Spangled Banner as just one of many different songs that could be sung. America the Beautiful, God Bless America; a few others maybe.

What makes you think owners don't already do this sometimes? I think the NFL is pretty good supporting active duty and veterans. I guess you are saying they need to show it on camera more? And what is wrong with flyovers?

Pampered millionaires shouldn't have to show support for those who have served their country.

They may forego playing it for events with black players, because they seem to be the only ones offended by this nation.
.
Oh, I'd disagree with that.

There are people who clearly hate this country's history and traditions, and it's more ideological than ethnic.
.
Yes, but none of them can score a touchdown.
