Homelessness. Let me ask you this

That's already been tried....called housing projects. One got so bad here that taxis, USPS, FedEx, UPS and Dominos refused to deliver there. Fireman would respond only with Police escort.

would it really bother you if we created project-like buildings where people lived for free in a dumpy apartment?
What should bother anyone is the notion of warehousing people in 'dumpy apartments' as opposed to investing in education and training programs, and for those incapacitated or disabled providing them access to vocational rehabilitation.

Nope, would not bother me in the least.

We also need more affordable housing for workers. Housing should never cost more than one third of your income. If you are making 8 or 9 bucks an hour bouncing between three different part time jobs just to put food on the table, you can't afford $800 a month rent.

There are plenty of skilled and educated people who are out of work, or working at min wage service jobs. Harvard accepts a higher ratio of applicants than McDonald's does.

That which you don't own, you don't value.
To temper that a bit:

That for which you did not work, you value less.

That might be true, but I also see people who trash their own things, and people who take good care of things that are not theirs. People are people, and you can never really tell who is going to turn out to be a dirtbag.

I have hired a lot of people over the years who were homeless, and put them up in a place to stay to help get them on their feet. I rarely had any trouble with them. On the other hand, I have tenants who pay top dollar for an apartment or a rental house and wind up trashing the place so bad I have to take them to court.

The solution to such a problem would be helping people get back on their feet. Sometimes having housing they can use as they like is not the option. What people often need to get back on their feet is an address so they can apply for jobs, and some support in getting the job, perhaps help with a suit and what not.

Some people don't want a job. So don't give them that support.

Yes sir, we can be just like the Mexicans. !2 people in a two room apartment. Right skull whatever it takes. That's the new American way. Work 5 MW jobs (if that's what it takes) get food stamps (if that's what it takes) live in your car (if that's what it takes) get HEAP for heat (if that's what it takes).

The new American dream. Whatever it takes to survive.

Yes it would. Along with all the others who have commented on these people not deserving or valuing it, I've got another view.....

My mother - in - law runs a trio of programs which find subsidized, low income housing for the homeless. I hear the stories from her on a weekly basis of having to evict people at the end of their 18 month limit in the program because they refuse to take the hand up and instead expect the handout.

Yeah because living with a roommate is just soooo degrading.

Idiot.

San Francisco had the idea of using a retired cruise ship as housing for the homeless. For safety reasons drugs and alcohol were prohibited. Advocates for the homeless protested the intrusion into personal lives. The project was scrapped.

The Obama economy.

More people should do what most Hispanics do. The household includes mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and so on -- all pitching in to pay the bills and survive. Legal as well as illegal.

True, so long as the pooled monies are coming from WORK not from state assistance checks.

every time we want something the government tells us there's no money in the budget and our taxes would go up.
every time they want something, they pull a couple billion dollars out of their ass.
