I don't believe the content of the film is what provoked the violence in those countries. Give some thought to our actions in the Middle East over the past few decades. His name is Nakoula Basseley Nakoula
So this guy's movie caused people to commit murder. That's a pretty neat trick. Do you think the fact that I use a Koran in 2-ply could cause someone to commit murder?
If you watched the bombing of Baghdad in March, 2003, on television, that wasn't a fireworks show. That was our military reducing a modern city to rubble and killing thousands of innocent civilians, some of them little children in their beds. And while the Bush Administration had successfully convinced the majority of Americans the action was in retaliation for the 9/11 attack on the U.S., and was necessary to eliminate the threat of Saddam Hussein's "weapons of mass destruction," the fact is Iraq had absolutely nothing to do with the 9/11 attack and there were no such weapons in Iraq.
The fact is the Bush Administration deliberately misled the U.S. into unlawfully attacking, invading, and occupying a sovereign nation, killing hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in the process and virtually destroying one of the oldest civilizations in the world. And it is believed he did so on behalf of the oil industry.
How much hatred for America do you think was inspired by those years of suffering?
How much hatred for America do you think has been generated by such revelations as the Abu Ghraib prison brutalities, the Guantanamo tortures, the collateral deaths of civilians in the ongoing drone attacks, and on and on?
The things our government has misused our military resources to inflict on the Islamic world in recent years has inspired a hatred for us which is much too toxic and profound for us to fully understand. So it wasn't the film that inspired the attacks on our embassies. The film was just the metaphorical match that lit a fuse. And I believe it was just the beginning of what is to become a long and very destructive fatwah against the West.
And we have the Bush Administration and all who have followed in its immoral and criminal practices to thank for it. The film-maker is nothing but a scapegoat.
