    1. Its impossible to ignore recent history and gun violence at schools. A gun at school is about the equivilent of a bomb on a plane.

    2. I never saw a SWAT team called to a school to break up a fight. Granted I did graduate in 2005 so things might have radically changed over the past 4 and 1/2 years.

    3. Personally, if a teacher or principal was ever to paddle my kid I would beat the shit out of them. It is my sole god given right as a parent to beat that kid, no one elses. Also Ritilan has helped alot of kids. However ill agree that it is over prescribed.

    4. Bullshit

    5. Expelled probably not but the zero tolerance policies are in place for a reason. Have parents actually be responsible and register the drugs, Advil or whatever, with the schools nurse so the kid can take them if he/she ever gets a headache. I used to take Ibuprofen before and after football games.... ofcourse I would have been considered as abusing them and didnt register them with the nurse but I wasnt stupid about it and never got in trouble.

    6. Lets face it, if youre failing high school classes you're probably not going to college. Probably some underlying behavioral problems, apathy, or the kid may just be that stupid.

    7. Again, bullshit.

    8. More bullshit.

Well Bill, I suspect it was supposed to be satire. However, although it may sound like b.s., somewhere, on some day, these scenarios are being played out. We've lost sight of common sense. The Supreme Court is now arguing over a detention for violation of a school dress code. Everything that happens at school has LITERALLY become a federal case.

    Great post silkcity.

    Scenario 9:

Black students are introduced to Billy's school for the first time.

1959 - Most of Billy's friends and their families show up outside of school before it begins to express distress over the fact that their children will be sharing classrooms with "*******." A few people throw rocks at the black students and their police escorts. In response to the issue, Billy's county decides to shut down all public schools rather than submit to the horrors of racial integration.

2009 - The black students are welcomed as any other students would be.

    Am I doing it right?

The depiction of 1959 is very close to reality. I used to bring a pocket knife to school. If you were caught with it, they would take it away. Not because you might stab someone, but because you would use it to carve your initials in the desk.

I remember when a child acted up in public the parent was expected to publicly beat the child. If a child threw a tantrum and the parent just scolded him, people would whisper what a bad parent they were. Now...they call the police and take away your child

I also remember taking apart firecrackers and using the gunpowder to pack into an asprin bottle to make a bomb. We would take it out in a field, light it and run as it exploded. Now, that would be looked at as a potential Columbine

1959 - student gets pregnant - gets sent to special school and puts baby up for adoption

2009 - teachers throw celebratory baby shower - school builds daycare - grandparents rejoice in another meal ticket

    Scenario 10:

1959 - Billy and other Students find out that one of their own is a Homosexual. They proceed to try and beat the evil disease out of him, failing to do so. They turn to the adults, looking for help in the situation, the adults have a solution while the student's parents are so ashamed. The parents send the student to a reeducation camp in hopes of fixing him.

2009 - Shit, that happens now more today.
    ----
Example of doing it wrong.

    Scenario 11:

1959 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack. (Using Silk's example)

2009 - Jack feels he has been picked on one too many times, along with his mental illness and how easy it is to get guns, Jack brings his shogun and other guns to school. Jack waits until lunchtime before entering the lunchroom armed to the teeth. Jack shoots up his school, killing many. Politicians and officials alike promise this will never happen again, same thing occurs less than six months later.
    ---

    Still doing it wrong?
