Let's say you advance into enemy territory part of the way to your objective. You set up defensive positions after the advance starts to stall. You then send out a few assault troops to conquer a few prestigious enemy positions (that they will feel compelled to regain) and fall back to the defensive position when the enemy counter-attacks. The pre-arranged defenders that were left behind chop them to pieces as a bleed the enemy white strategy and you try to keep repeating the strategy as long as the enemy plays along. One problem I can see is how to get your OWN side to go along with running out, retreating, etc. over and over again while gaining no ground. In particular, people may want to follow up initial grains instead of falling back and defending and that could definitely screw up the entire strategy.
