Has any Republican President downsized government?

So I guess it's pretty apparent to people that are clear thinking. Many presidents have actually campaigned on lowering spending..and shrinking the government..but few actually do it. The last time these "austerity", "laissez-faire" methods were actually implemented it had horrific effects in the form of the great depression. America has seen it's greatest growth, when the government invested in innovation. This "low-taxes", "low-spending" "paradise" dream is nothing more then that.

What do low taxes and low spending have to do with the Great Depression?

Just wondering.

This should be easy.

Off hand..Clinton made the size of the Government smaller..

It is nearly impossible to downsize government. That is why I so strongly oppose expanding it in the first place.

Why do you say "nearly impossible?"

Because the tea partiers all bitch about wanting smaller government, but ask them if they're willing to cut back or eliminate Social Security? Nope. How about Medicare? No way. Military spending? Hell no!

Those are the three largest expenditures of the Federal government, making up approximately 75% of the Federal budget. Unless we're going to address those three things, we're wasting our time.

You know why, I would hope. Because even though people talk like they want to reduce spending, and the size of Government. When you get right down to trying to cut actual things. It becomes nearly impossible, Often political suicide to do. Most politicians can not see past the next election, so it is very difficult to get the votes to actually cut things.

Still waiting for you to identify a successful Libertarian government anywhere in the world....

Don't seem to be many flocking to the Libertarian ideals
America, for its first 150 years....And millions upon millions of people flocked to our shores.

Next?

Ludite

America moved from a isolationist, agrarian based economy into the most powerful nation on earth since we abandoned your Libertarian nonsense.

FDR turned us into a modern Democracy....we are not going back
Bullshit.

Mechanization moved us form an agrarian economy to an industrial one...That had absolutely nothing to do with Big Daddy Big gubmint.

Next Fabian fable?

As a percentage of GDP, several presidents have:

No....That's why there are guys like me calling them on their bullshit.

The only part of gubmint that Bubba made smaller, rather than merely slowing the presumed baseline increases, was in the military.

Pretty lame attempt, even for you.
Awwwwwwwwwwww......still tryin' to compare Bill Clinton with Lil' Dumbya??? :eusa_eh:

Pretty lame attempt, even for you.

Well realistically unless either party cuts government spending and stops bailouts and other measures that increase the national debt there won't be a democratic party or a republican party left, and Obama and his supporters will find themselves lynched like in the French Revolution, a deep irony considering their current policies, and party of the people facade.

All that will remain is the tea party (which will replace the Republicans), independents, radical leftists, corporations and the military. It's an open book when the government collapses from bankruptcy, but its likely going to be either:

*Corporate police state.
*Minarchist America (run by tea party types).
*Division of America into smaller states.

Because 300 million people are too many to control from one central location.

And make no mistake about it, that the current crowd of progressive goombahs in the District of Criminals are all about central control.

Miss out on that Civil War stuff?

It is because of a powerful Federal Government that the US moved from being a splintered agrarian economy to the most powerful military and economic power in history. FDR changed the US into a modern democracy and we haven't looked back since

We started the downhill slide before then. What kinda Fabian Swill have you been swallowing?

And to compete in a modern world..with a growing population, this country is going to have to invest.

And anyone telling anything else is perscribing that we go back in time.

Sorry.

That's as wrong as it gets.

That's a lie Progressives have been successfully telling for generations and it's just wrong.

Hoover was an FDR Tax and spend Soviet style central plan Progressive.

The Low Tax, low Spend Presidents were Harding and Coolidge, the Progressive Soviet Central plan Tax and Spend were Hoover and FDR.

Epic Fail on your part.

neither party is likely to downsize government.

Each is likely to downsize the parts they don't like and increase spending on parts they do like.

Such has been the case for generations.

Paradise isn't an option....Perfection isn't an option.

What a romanticized, historically inaccurate view of the reality of our first 150 years. Is government handouts of free land in the libertarian ethos? How about the policy of manifest destiny? How about stealing indian lands and treaty violations? Is human bondage now a libertarian value?

The U.S. has never had a Libertarian style government, even from the founding.

Not without Democrats screaming to the press it's going to starve women, children, and old people, and keep reindeer sleds from running in Yellowstone.
