Harley-Davidson to move some motorcycle production out of U.S. in big Trump-tariff fail

We were already losing Harley as their sales in the USA slipped.

WSJ:
"...Harley prizes its made-in-the-USA reputation as central to its appeal to customers all over the world. But the Milwaukee company has opened factories in Brazil, India and Australia to tap international markets and hold down prices as sales Falter in the U.S.".."

etc
But can Germany afford to lose Mercedes or BMW?

Harley is small potatoes, tho their iconic name lends more PR value, hurting Trumpov's plan/war more than it deserves to.

So then you shouldn't shed a tear when a BMW or Mercedes costs 20% more.

The EU are trade abusers. To them free trade means "free money for us"

The US has 12,000 tariffs including one on light trucks. The fact is that the US does the same thing.

Didn't they make this announcement in 2015? What was their excuse then?

There will be some short turn pain, rest assured, the foreign governments will feel the pain alot more, they are the ones with the massive trade surplus against the U.S. It's about time they get a taste of their own medicine.

Trump offered the G7, "no tariffs, no subsidies, no trade barriers" Not one taker, because they are full of shyte about "protectionism", they love exploiting the U.S and protecting their own nation.

Trump was full of shit, Trump does not have the power to remove all tariffs and subsidies...that is why there was no takers, they knew Trump was just talking out of his ass...again

No, these other leaders are full of it. They smile and wave and when you turn your back they stick a knife in it.

Get smart.

You have no clue what you are talking about.

You need to get smart.

Trump's tariffs have resulted in European retaliation against (among others) Harley-Davidson, which is feeling stung by the move and it now plans to shift production overseas. Layoffs and/or US plant closures are likely.

Silly me, I thought Making America Great Again was the opposite of bringing jobs overseas.

The good news is that Trump will probably cave and backtrack on his tariffs in the near future, while pretending to have gotten some sort kick-ass deal with the rest of the world.
Harley-Davidson to move some motorcycle production out of U.S. after EU tariffs
Harley has been in decline for YEARS. Well before Trump came along. They are desperately trying to remain relevant in a hipster market.

3/10 on spin effort

You are spinning so much you are dizzy.

0/10 on spin effort.

The bottom line is these tariffs were supposed to create more jobs. Here is an example of jobs leaving. Tariff fail.
The bottom line is Harley has been struggling for a few years and they attempted to pin their struggles on Trump and the willing uninformed lemmings fell for it.

Quite embarrassing

They are admitting the truth. They cannot compete against competitors who make their bikes overseas and do not pay tariffs. More companies will be forced to wrestle with this.

You flunk Economics 101.

HD is famous for making land-yachts, so big and heavy, you can't stand them up when they fall over, which they do all the time.
They need to talk to the Germans, English and Italians about charisma, and the Japanese about technology.
Meanwhile, Yuppie Faux-bikies all over the world will continue to shell out, whatever the cost, to get the latest monstrosity from HD.

And if they do....they can color their motorcyles no longer wanted because the term MADE IN AMERICA is why veterans began to buy them and become bad boys on bikes.

Well, by god, then I will bet that Marlon Brando will never again buy a Harley!

(Just kidding, Gracie. In the movie, the Wild Ones, Brando rode a British made Triumph. In fact, so did the Fonz in "Happy Days". Not to put too fine a point on it, so did Steve McQeen in "The Great Escape").

Hey, Brainless! The decision to close the KC Harley plant and build overseas was made before the US tariffs were announced.

The US will suffer from all this hostility that the orange has created. He is causing problems here and abroad...such a baboon.

How are the EU trade abusers? Please, make a case of why you think this is so.

Tariffs, hidden quotas, general trade barriers often via regulations designed to specifically exempt their own businesses while disqualifying foreign companies.

Emission standards as an example. So, a regulation might come down the pike in a years time, the government will let their domestic companies know "engineer your car accordingly", then, a year later when a new regulation is quickly presented and passed, to save the environment or some other apparent cause "oh, sorry American car company, we have this new standard, you don't meet it currently. Work on your newer models and we will see",

These are old dirty tricks, tricks Americans don't use as you just say "let the market decide" the EU and Canada specially, have central control, THEY are deciding. They just dress it up as "concerned government". It's a racket designed to harm U.S industry.

10 days ago · President Donald Trump officially announced tariffs on more than $50 billion worth of Chinese goods on Friday and threatened to implement more if the Chinese government retaliates with tariffs of their own.

That would mean Trump's announcement came over 4 months AFTER Harley made the decision to close the KC plant.

Quite a gamble for H-D to move some production to Europe and set aside $90-$100 million per year to pay tariffs out of its own pocket instead of passing the cost on to consumers. If Trump's rhetoric produces an anti-American sentiment among foreign consumers then H-D future could be doubtful.

Which Canadian and EU producers have to meet as well.

Yes, but did you read my post? They are given a heads up, or in the case of Canada, they have operatives already in executive positions within the company so they are "in the know", No different than inside trading.

You would be surprised how dirty these state "guided" economies work. They've perverted capitalism and America is being exploited, your taxes and debt subsidizing their central systems.

Shouldn't the tariffs have saved the jobs? That's the claim of what they do isn't it?
