All deaths, all ages, all causes related to the use of firearms, are generously estimated at about thirty or forty thousand a year.

The statistics cited in the article are poorly presented and confusing, but seem to be claiming deaths of children from firearm-related causes in the low thousands per year. Let's call it three thousand.
