A number of political and economic experts have affirmed in an opinion poll conducted by Sudan Vision that the American sanctions imposed on Sudan have caused considerable damage to Sudan and undermined its interests.
They described them as a persisting threat that has led to the backwardness of the Sudanese citizen and the government, demanding Sudanese organisations to lead a national initiative and campaign against these sanctions.
Mohamed Abdulgadir, Editor-in-Chief of Alraie Aalam daily, in his column, hailed the system that brings together the central intelligence agencies (CISSA) in its workshop that concluded yesterday in Khartoum under the slogan, “American Sanctions and their effect on the national security, Sudan a case in point”.
He said Sudan’s experience with the sanctions can be cited as an example to clarify its devastating effects they have had on the country through a long course that contributed in bringing about the state of deterioration in the field of services (transport, planes) medical equipment and the related technological systems.
He added that these sanctions are renewed annually disregarding the realities and the conditions of the people and the positive change from the part of the government in dealing with many files, a matter that affirms that the embargos are but an arbitrary procedure to pressure not only the government, but Sudanese people.
The Parliament Economic Committee Member, Economic Expert Babikir Mohamed Tom believes that the economic sanctions have disrupted Sudan’s outward looking trend to the world which represent impediments on the way of attracting foreign investments because investors fear imposition of sanctions on them for dealing with Sudan.
He further outlined the effect and the huge devastation inflicted on the citizen, particularly the vulnerable before the government.
Tom said due to these sanctions basic commodities were affected, like medications along with huge devastation inflicted on the sector of transport leading to its collapse like the railway line, the national carrier Sudanair and the banking system.
With regards to America’s exclusion to the commodity of Gum Arabic from the embargo, he said this evidence proves the importance of Gum Arabic in the American industry, asserting that boycotting this commodity will mean the loss of many jobs in America particularly in the aftermath of its approval by the Medical Organisation of Food and Medicine leading to the increase of the international demand for it.
For his part, the Secretary General of Gum Arabic Council Dr. Abdulmagid Abdulgadir said Washington has realised the volume of damage it inflicted on itself due to its unjust embargo imposed on the country for more than 17 years, particularly in the field of Gum Arabic, a matter that made it to exclude the product from the list.
However, he said this exclusion came with many restrictions like specifying the qualities and quantities and the agencies of purchase and looking for the details of its ownership and the capital, noting that these restrictions have harmed America before harming Sudan.
Abdulgadir said America has thought it important to exit these restrictions, thus for the first time in the history of the American state department it established a seat for the commodity of Gum Arabic in the American embassy to reduce its high cost due to the embargo as it is a commodity of inflexible demand. It imports Gum Arabic from other and countries via multinational agents and through multiple ports, a matter that will increase its cost and prolongs the period of delivery along with further complications in terms of banking.
Lecturer of Political Science and political analyst Hassan Alsaouri said Washington does not want to normalise relations with Sudan because it seeks the downfall of its regime. He said that Sudan can apply pressure on American by halting deals with it in combating terrorism and exporting Gum Arabic to medicinal drugs and Cola companies.
Alsaouri called on national organisations to lead a national initiative to rebut these sanctions and reduce their effects on the country.
