They didn't. Fewer voters voted for Trump in 2016 than voted for Romney in 2012. The ONLY people who turned out to vote for Trump was the KKK, Aryan Nation, and all of the white supremacists and white nationalists. They slithered out from under their rocks answering his dog whistles and seeing their chance.
Combined with the Religious Right who could never vote for a President who didn't say they opposed abortion, you elected a Russian agent.
