"Free College Tuition" is NOT a pipe-dream

Certain Degrees already are. Decades ago a Liberal Arts degree meant you were a well rounded person, challenged intellectually by your professors, and versed in what made out society what it is. Today, like Communications majors, marketing majors, and X studies majors, it means "I couldn't make up my mind, so I took X".

I will say that at this time, I won't hire anyone without a bachelors. I would shy away from an underwater basket weaving major like liberal arts and would not consider an ethnic studies major.

I sincerely don' t care what right wing imbeciles may think about Sander's proposal......College education is not something that right wingers know much about anyway.

All the negativism expressed on this thread is bullshit, since the rest of the civilized world is pretty much doing this already. American exceptional-ism is one of the many slogans used to keep the right wing sheep in place.

See, I believe Gnat when he says he is an out of work Professor - he sees this as a path to a cushy job teaching ethnic studies to those with low double digit IQ's.

Planning to take my class?

BTW, NOT out-of-work....but retired.

No, nitwit....its NOT the government that decided which major...It is the much beloved marketplace based on various surveys that determine which projected employment sectors are hiring.

Second, all you know about college sports are what you've gathered from ESPN.

Oh really?

Explain "Ethnic Studies" then? Number of job prospects? Zero - yet one of the fastest growing majors at the far left ivy league schools.

Question, does a degree in ethnic studies help one in starting a riot in places like Ferguson? Does Harvard offer classes in effective rioting? Is there a "looting" department at Princeton?

So colleges limit the # of slots per major based on the current job prospects???

Its already being done.....Back in the late 70s and early 80s, there were some [unsuccessful] lawsuits against universities based on the claim that various departments should inform prospective students that the job market was scant for graduates in that particular discipline.

Further, small, for-profit business colleges are heavily penalized by the Dept. of Education for offering skills that are no longer needed by the marketplace

You got any links for this, buddy?

My Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering takes exception to the statement you made.

Please indicate where I did that. We are not discussing minority groups, but Democratic Party support. The thugs are yours, created and encouraged by Democrat policies and rabble-rousing. That they are black is also your doing. You've been screwing over the black man for a couple of centuries now.

I've long noticed that conservative, closet-racist (knowing that racism is not easily acceptable) have now found a way to avoid their own nagging conscience: They BLAME democrats for minorities' bad behavior and also blame democrats for "causing" them to be racists......Go figure.

It's not just blame, but the record of history.

Here's a short version for you to dispute.

On Racism and Republicans The History of Republican Evil

Actually no, there would still be a "private system"......and something that conservatives would surely "love"....perhaps a "voucher" toward college tuition??

It's not private if the government is footing the bill.

They are people who should still be given a chance, remedial classes are not a bad thing, colleges should have them.

If you're still at a remedial level upon entering college you don't belong there.

People are responsible for themselves, don't see why they're not, only right wingers believe that idiocy. Public education does need more funding..

Public education is already funded more than it ever has been. It's also funded more in this country than any other country in the world. If you don't think our current level is enough then please present us with the number. How much should we be spending to educate a student?

As expected, some right wingers on this forum are ridiculing Sanders' call for free college tuition......Of course, the low intelligence of some right wingers is legendary and, as usual, they mistake the term "free" as just another socialistic "give-away."

First, right wingers should realize that throughout the civilized world, college tuition IS free (except for books and lodging expenses.) Haw can the rest of the world do this? Simple, first one has to determine if free tuition is an investment in the most precious resource a country has....and that is a better economic future through educating its youth.

Second, YES tuition would be paid through an increase in state taxation; after all, most universities are sitting on land grants and universities' charter clearly spell out that they exist for the be betterment of the community, along with the need for both teaching and research.

Third, (and this is something that conservatives SHOULD like if they exercised their brain cells a bit more); that is, tenure for professors may be soon a thing of the past.....part-time/adjunct faculty is on the rise, and THAT should drastically cut down on the very expensive staffing of colleges and universities. The cost of a tenured professor's teaching of 2 or 3 classes could translate to the hiring of 5 part-timers to teach about 15 or so classes.

Fourth, tuition could also be drastically reduced if universities get off their insane quest for college sports. Coaches in such institutions make an average of 3 times the salary of the institution's president or provost. This insanity causes tuitions to be raised for ALL other students to basically subsidize jocks and the athletic staff.

Finally, free tuition should be granted FIRST to students who major in fields that can readily benefit all of the taxed society....Need more doctors? Offer free tuition at medical schools; Need more information technology graduates? the same applies; Need more engineers? Same........

Free tuition must have the caveats of a student's high grades, discipline at matriculation, completion and commitment to pay back to the society that subsidized (and invested in) such free tuition.
Other than your childish attack you have a point. Whether the right-wing wants to admit it or not free college tuition to state schools is very appealing to obviously poor Americans, but also to the middle class. College cost $40k a year times that is $160k! If you have more than one kid your fucked. College has become unaffordable. Therefore, while the middle class might resist Obamacare, many won't resist free college tuition.

We mock Sanders because he is wrong on so many issues that he is easy to mock. However Hillary jumped on the free tuition train. Imagine the debate when the Republican candidate seeks the argument, "it's not free how are we going to pay for it." Hilliary's response, "that is what every middle class family says at the dinner table every night. It is an invest in the next generation of Americans. How are we going to afford it? Tell that to the graduate who has more in student loan payments then he makes!

Agree....and Thank You........and to that hypothetical "Hillary rebuttal" I would add that somehow we ALWAYS manage to find dollars to fund wars.

Finally, I would also add (as I have stated on this thread) that university themselves need to find ways and implement them to cut down the cost of tuition (and for that objective there are many, many ways.)

If you're at a remedial level, your idea is to say "Fuck you." Sorry, but that's a sad way to look at life, what about people who struggle in specific subjects? Yes, and I think it should be funded more, more money given to states, higher teacher salaries.. It's not about a specific number, it's about addressing the core issues.

The fallacy there is once government picks up the bill there is massive waste and over-spending. Cost will go up when state school are paid for by the government.

No, they can do it because none of them pay for a serious military defense. We pay for that, allowing them to pay for their kids to get degrees in 16th century French poetry with a minor in gender studies, and then they leave college, return home and sign up for welfare.

Doctors are not going to go into medicine under obamacare...they are already leaving, they aren't going to sacrifice their youth, studying 24/7 to be government clock punchers at 70 grand a year......dream on....

Yes...let's tax the middle class plumber whose kid is going to become a mechanic so some other kid can get a degree in poetry....makes sense doesn't it?
