Flustered Rachel Maddow defends Russia investigation as Durham probe shifts to criminal inquiry

MSNBC star Rachel Maddow was on the defensive Thursday night after multiple reports said the Justice Department investigation into the origins of the Russia inquiry had shifted into a criminal probe.

Maddow, who had beeen the face of MSNBC's coverage of the two-year investigation into alleged collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign, was baffled at the opening of her show Thursday night by the ongoing investigation from U.S. Attorney John Durham, whom Attorney General William Barr had appointed earlier this year.

"This is the news that honestly, we've been sort of expecting for some time or thinking that if things got really bad, it might come to this," Maddow told her viewers. "As of tonight, according to the New York Times, it has come to this."

Perhaps the above explains (1) why DOJ is now investigating its own conduct; and (2) why the investigation is now a criminal investigation

Maddow didn't look flustered or confused. She was wondering on what basis was the DOJ investigating itself. What are the charges? And it's funny how this comes out as Trumps crimes are being described in high definition. This attempt to intimidate others who may testify against Trump is apparent, but you right wingers are too stupid to see what's happening. If Trump was so innocent why all of this? It ain't about draining the swamp because he's had all kinds of corruption on his watch.

Just for fun, imagine if President Obama had recruited Putin to deliver dirt on Trump, and offered just about anything in return.

On the other hand, if you look a little back in history, how come President Obama acknowledged that yes, "We tortured some folks", and no one in the CIA faced prosecution for that, much less the goons in the Justice Department who wrote the memos "justifying" it all? Don't get me started on baby Bush's criminal war of aggression on Iraq. That's to say, "letting them get away with murder" has a bit of a tradition, even while the Trumpletons have taken that game to an entirely new level.

All that said, it remains to be seen what Durham is going to dig up, or will fail to dig up, as the case may be. Barr reportedly closely oversees that investigation, and that bodes ill. On the other hand, Barr is also smart enough to know that by investigating / charging members of the prior administration, he is setting a precedent that might, one day, reach his own good self. So that should put some dampers on the quasi- and extra-legal shenanigans he might consider engaging in.
