(Reuters) - President Barack Obama will sign an executive order on Wednesday to raise the minimum wage for federal contract workers to $10.10 an hour starting next year, the White House said.

Obama announced during his State of the Union address last month that he intended to take executive action to raise wages for federal contract workers, but the White House had not said when he would do so.

The order will affect workers starting on January 1, 2015, and applies to new contracts and replacements for expiring contracts.

REalistically, what can congress do.? The dems have a majority in the senate so any impeachment by the house will end in acquittal.

All Your New Messiah has done with this act of arrogance is to make everything the federal government buys (and for which you pay) more expensive.

One possible side effect: Suppliers of items which the feds don't buy in quantity but under contract may elect to no longer offer those items for federal purchase as to do so they might have to increase wages for everybody connected with making the same product no matter to whom it is sold.

You could find Obama having to shop for Moochelle's arugula in Kenya.

I watched him giving his signing Speach to a group of supporters today. He said that Republicans opposed it because raising it causes inflation, but, says the president, inflation is low right now so it's a good time to do it.

The inflationary argument is the weakest that Republicans can make, almost now a canard except for FF restaurants.

The best reason is the harm it does to the people it's supposedly going to help who aren't worth the new higher minumum wage because they are unproven as employees. That's why they are hired in at MW in the first place. Prospects for jobs will be hired who'se skills and self discipline are proven because they have the experience to earn their pay right from the beginning and will require less supervision and will have a much accelerated learning curve.

People with no job experience, those who populate the ranks of minimum wage workers, will find it a lot harder to get that first job and get on track.

Only 1.2% of the workforce is working at the MW. An even smaller subset are working for contractors doing work for contractors doing work for the government. Those contractors will most likely just use those people they have who already earn $10.10 and higher.

That will mean that those earning $7.25 will lose out on work. They can't be paid $10.10 without paying the guys already already earning $10.10 still more. The easiest solution to that quandary is to keep their present minimum wage guys out of the mix, likely causing them temporary loss of work or simply being laid off.

If they are used in the govt contract, they will suffer a pay cut after the govt job is done. An employer will not want to have that happen if only because of the morale problems. His best recourse will be to go for the better employees from the start for govt., jobs or in all his jobs.

I speak as a construction contractor of thirty five years. Having low skill people requiring high supervision who are marginally effective from a productivity standpoint can and will be a avoided rather than dealing with all that.

Minimum wage in a FF restaurant is a different animal than even laboring in a construction crew.
