I agree 100%. This teaching is more in the line of propaganda than myth though. Used in the dark ages, when people were not allowed to be in possession of the scriptures, to inject fear for control and to empty the wallets of the church's subjects.

We as evil men have laws against cruel and unusual punishment so just a shred of common sense would stop someone from saying in one breath that God is love and in the next if you don't believe you will suffer for eternity. It isn't logical thinking and makes no sense because you certainly didn't ask to be born.

It would be no different than a judge sentencing a person to 100 years in prison for stealing a stick of bubble gum.

The only positive thing that comes from this teaching is that it moves people toward the scripture which has the power to save.
