Don't mess with Texas

Stupid Texas

State District Judge Marisela Saldaña doled out an emotional lecture and the maximum possible sentence for what amounted to roughly $7,300 in damage, according to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. But that’s small change compared to the more than $140,000 Texas taxpayers will shell out to keep Perez locked up so long.

$140K to lock him up for eight years for doing $7,300 damage??

Only in Texas. What a bunch of dumbasses

The Judge is a Dem. That doesn't make ALL of Texas stupid.

And they're running a budget surplus by the way.

Wait...

Deciding whether to lock someone up should depend on the cost? Or should it depend on the law?

Also, have you done any such analysis of the cost of jailing -- in federal prison -- those who refuse to pay the health care tax for not having coverage?

From link:

judgeAs it turns out, a Texas judge’s fiery speech sentencing a teenager to eight years in prison for graffiti was all for show. District Court Judge Marisela Saldaña apparently didn’t understand that stacking sentences, which would have forced 18-year-old Sebastian Perez to serve four two-year prison terms consecutively, wasn’t allowed for this case. Yesterday, Judge Saldaña was forced to abide by the law and reduce Perez’s sentence to two years in prison and two years of community service, a still very sizable, serious punishment. |KIII-TV3|

This should be a civil issue. The problem is fixed with equity. There's no violence involved. The kid should make up or fix the grafitti and do tons of community service. This judge should be defrocked.

I have no use for grafitti "artists" but eight years is a bit extreme.

Have the kid give up a few months of weekends doing community service and be done with it.

Woman calls 911 when husband refuses to eat dinner

Dec 23, 9:10 PM (ET)

KERRVILLE, Texas (AP) - Prosecutors will review the case of a woman authorities claim has called 911 30 times over six months for non-emergency reasons, including a call to complain that her husband refused to eat his dinner. Last Friday, the woman allegedly made a pair of calls to 911, including a hang-up and another where a woman was heard screaming.

Police were dispatched to the residence and officer Paul Gonzales said police were told by her that "her husband did not want to eat his supper." A police report said the 53-year-old woman was also yelling "about things that happened two weeks ago."

The woman now faces charges of 911 abuse.

I put Texans on par with the people of Afghanistan - both groups are still in the "stone-age".

Your right, neither can stand crime and punish the criminals for it. While other states sit behind and cuddle fucks like this. Maybe we should blame the builder for building the store this turd graffiti on, because if he didn't build it this poor kid wouldn't graffiti

Texas Senate approves $182.3 billion budget | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Latest News

AUSTIN – The Senate unanimously approved a $182.3 billion, two-year state budget Thursday that covers many basic needs and doesn't raise taxes. So smooth was the process, it took just a few minutes, and senators asked no questions.

But that ease masks a looming fiscal crisis.

Billions of dollars in federal economic stimulus money let lawmakers traipse past tough decisions. But a similar federal bump isn't likely in 2011. And as school property tax cuts eat into the budget while business tax revenue keeps falling short, budget writers very well could have to slash in two years, especially if the recession lingers.

Earlier this year, Texas Governor Rick Perry was one of a handful of Republican governors who refused some federal stimulus funds from President Obama's economic recovery package on the grounds that there were too many strings attached to the money.

Now that the state is dire straits, however, Perry is asking the federal government for a loan to cover the very expenses the rejected stimulus money would have paid for.

Christian revisionism: Religion in Texas schools

In Texas yet another skirmish in the culture war, Christian fundamentalists want their religion in public schools. In particular, they want their religion in the history text book. Christian fundamentalists are now attempting to rewrite American history, claiming that without God there would be no United States.
