In a society that’s been nearly destroyed by proper and polished politicians the American people elected a not-so-proper and less-than-polished leader to take the reins because he was seen as the only choice free from the contaminated corruption of the political establishment. Even with his obvious flaws he is uninfected by the toxic malpractice representing both major political parties in the United States. Americans, disgusted with status quo, went to the polls and put Donald Trump in the White House as America’s first Putney Swope president.
But his clumsiness with language and his amateurish impulsiveness leave him vulnerable to attacks designed to incite opposition. The left, led by Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, has now found itself the moral and racial equivalent of a Cindy Sheehan and they are using it as a crafted mechanism for character assassination.
The first thing people should be asking is how did Wilson happen to be in that car at the exact moment that call was made? What was said in the call is monumentally less important than the fact that Wilson twisted it into a rallying cry suggesting that the president told a widow that her dead husband deserved what he got. Rep. Wilson has turned the poor widow of a dead soldier into an unwitting political pawn to generate hateful rhetoric against a sitting president.
Obviously the president is not insensitive enough to say such a thing but spreading the falsehood that he did is politically advantageous to the divisive forces that benefit from racial and ideological victimology. The president should have listened to his Chief of Staff John Kelly who advised him not to make calls to relatives of fallen soldiers.
The president let impulsiveness win out and he quickly discovered that in politics no good deed goes unpunished. As the first Putney Swope president Trump is in the process of dismantling a tainted political establishment and he poses a legitimate threat to an entrenched, maladapted political aristocracy that understands it is gone if he succeeds.
This is why he is being attacked from all sides. For the first time in decades a president stands for the interests of the people against a government infested with the interests of the government against the people.
If the president survives to a second term the people will win. Some very powerful people are facing jail and they will not give up easily. Putney Swope succeeds.
