DALLAS (AP) – The company that makes Twinkies, Wonder bread and Ding Dongs says it's making a final offer to workers to accept cost-cutting before it asks a bankruptcy court to impose the cuts.

The company said Saturday that if the unions reject the offer, it will push ahead with efforts in bankruptcy court to throw out the unions' collective bargaining agreements.

Workers represented by the Teamsters and the bakery and confectionary workers' unions voted in February to authorize a strike. Rayburn said that if workers walk off the job, the company will be forced to shut down and liquidate.

Twinkies maker Hostess gives unions 'final' offer

There was a time when unions served a purpose, but it isn't now. Just as is possibly happening here, this company may find itself shutting it';s doors and all of its employees will be out of jobs permanently. Is that the goal?

More and more companies should look for Right to Work states and those states will prosper with higher tax bases.

Twinkies maker Hostess gives unions 'final' offer

Another perfect example of how unions don't give a crap about workers. They only care about enhancing union power.

From the article.

"Consumers have been buying other snacks, such as yogurt, and more wheat bread. White bread's popularity has plunged from being eaten in 54 percent of all U.S. homes in 2000 to 36 percent last year, according to consumer-marketing research firm NPD Group."

Unions caused that drop in sales.

So we are cheering on the race towards lower living standards?

You do that everytime you buy Little Debbies because you think the Twinkies cost too much.

All you know is Little Debbies tastes OK and costs a lot less than Ho Hos, so you gobble them down, not thinking what you are doing to Union jobs. Why do you hate the union man so?

This is a great point. A large part of the problem is that what Hostess makes has largely been in decline as a market. Instead of adapting, they just figured they could take it out on teh working guys on the line.

Little Debbies is doing great. Of course, they are non-union.

Yep and void the contractual obligations they made. What good are corporations if they do not honor their contracts?

Right wingers think everything has a simple answer/cause. Not so. This is due to increased sugar costs due to increased production costs due to increased energy/oil prices.
Also America is eating a bit healthier. Their delivery costs also went up due to increased fuel costs.
And the unions have already made 2 rounds of concessions.

But in the RW mind it is all the unions fault.

it may just be time for that company to fail if they cannot uphold their contracts they made in good faith.

DJ Creditors Say Hostess May Have 'Manipulated' Executive Pay

By Rachel Feintzeig
Of DOW JONES DAILY BANKRUPTCY REVIEW

Unsecured creditors suspect that Hostess Brands Inc. may have "manipulated" its executives' pay--sending its former chief executive's salary, in particular, skyrocketing- in the months leading up to its Chapter 11 filing, in an effort to dodge the Bankruptcy Code's compensation requirements, according to a redacted court filing reviewed by Dow Jones.

The official committee representing Hostess's unsecured creditors wants to launch a formal investigation in the bankruptcy case, hoping to dig deeper into the bakery company's senior executive compensation. The information the group has already gathered suggests "the possibility" that the company converted a chunk of its top executives' pay from performance-based bonuses to guaranteed salary, "at least in part to sidestep" rules designed to ensure that companies in bankruptcy aren't enticing their employees to stay on board with the promise of cash.

Little Debbies is doing great. Of course, they are not held hostage by Union thugs, and are much more nimble and able to compete.

Sound familiar?

how low do you think their standards will be when all those employees hit the bricks? Hostess has not been doing well....they filed for chapter Chap. 11 in 2009...

snip-
Hostess, founded as a bread maker in 1930, has to contend with a particularly cumbersome work force, a legacy of how it was built through acquisitions since the 1960s. As it gobbled up bakeries across the country, Hostess wound up with 372 collective-bargaining agreements, 40 multi-employer pension plans, 5,500 delivery routes and a vast production system.

How much would you say that CEO pay increase translates into the cost of a package of Twinkies on the store shelves?

Or perhaps this is an attempted red herring (FAIL)?

LOL

Reading comporehension problems?

CEO is singular Executives as the article states is Plural.

Hostess gobbled up all those little bakeries with their union obligations. they created this mess that is too big to survive.

I think you mean Red Zingers not Red Herrings.

You posted that the problem was due largely to executive pay increases.

Did you mean that, or were you trying to lie and obfuscate like a predictable Liberal Liar?

Give me the amount said pay increases added to a pack of Twinkies, in your estimation.

price floors create "dead weight lose"...i.e. wage floors set by unions, lead to unemployment. Its great for the union worker....not so good for the guy who wants a job and is willing to work for less but is unemployed. This is purely an observation, not a value statement....
