Did New York times break the law when making Trump allegations without proof?

the new york times said they took the time and hunted down and contacted all of the people these women said they told 20-30 years when their alleged kiss or groping happened, who verified these women's stories...

that showed the effort on the Times of trying to discern the truth... the times does not believe they can be sued.

Donald Trump threatens to sue New York times for false allegations and defamation of character

"The Times story featured two women, Jessica Leeds and Rachel Crooks, who said that Trump made inappropriate physical advances on them despite the fact that they had never met before. CNN has not been able to independently confirm their accounts."

If the two women did not provide sufficient evidence and the articles were still made, is that illegal? Will they be forced to pay a settlement?

What law do you think was broken?

Trump is a public personality- in order for him to win a defamation case he needs to prove
a) that what was said was false and
b) that what was said was done with malicious intent.

He'd have to prove they did not believe the story was true, that they printed.

since the access hollywood tape was released with Trump stating that he did force kisses on women and could grope, cuz he's a Star....and these women coming forward with their names and not anonymously, but risking their names, their lively-hood and Trump suing them, and the Times took the time to fly investigators out to the places where the people lived that were told about the gropes 20 to 30 years ago, and they confirmed the accusations the girls claimed at the time....I think the NYTimes covered their rear ends on this one, and can NOT be sued for defamation even if the women accusations end up not being true....

The women can be sued for false allegations by Trump, but then he would have to open himself up, to discovery... this is why I believe he hasn't mentioned suing the actual women making the allegations...only the Times, which seems more like he's just trying to stave off any other Newspaper revelations getting ready to surface.

Newspaper organization do not need "proof" but they should have two independent sources as confirmation.

The 1st Amendment gives a lot of leeway to the press but they are not exempt from the slander, libel, and defamation laws either.

shouldnt they have to prove its true otherwise they are causing defamation of character?
