As far as testifying behind closed doors, it's done so witness testimony does not influence future witnesses, much like with grand jury testimony.... the target's lawyers are not present.
The transcripts, less any classified info, will be released, eventually.
In the trial in the Senate, the defendant lawyers can question witnesses.
