It's interesting to note that there have been multiple films about demons, demonic possession, demon-hauntings, and exorcisms including Exorcist II: The Heretic, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, An American Haunting, Amityville II: The Possession, and The Shining.

These 'expositions' into the darker nether-realms of the human imagination suggest that we as a species are curious about indulgences of the mind.

Is that a reflection of modern civilization or something more archaic?

You decide...

PRIEST: Why are you possessing this adolescent boy, demon?
DEMON-POSSESSED BOY: This young-man/boy is a vessel...
PRIEST: What is your message to me?
DEMON/BOY: Do you know anything, priest?
PRIEST: I know of the sacraments and the proverbs of Christ.
DEMON: You are a pawn of the Devil!
PRIEST: No, I am a faithful servant of the Church, demon!
DEMON: Alright; "Father."
PRIEST: Tell me what I can do for you...to send you home.
DEMON: I want to know why you pester me about mischief!
PRIEST: Mischief is a tool of evil; you are not its servant.
DEMON: Neither are you; you are not above reproach/sin.
PRIEST: What is the purpose of mischief?
DEMON: To create intrigue...
PRIEST: Man needs no more intrigue than that which prompts diligence/labor.
DEMON: Mischief awakens us to the reality of chaos!
PRIEST: Chaos is simply another face of life, not its 'master.'
DEMON: There is no real certainty when it comes to the presence of darkness.
PRIEST: Life is a renunciation of the flesh, because our souls yearn for humility.
DEMON: Your ideals are mere vagaries of traditions and customs...
PRIEST: No, demon; tradition and prayer guard us from the vices of indulgence.
DEMON: If you're referring to gluttony/sloth, the flesh is not expendable!
PRIEST: It is true that the flesh is part of nature, but our spirits are stronger...
DEMON: Even the soul can be corrupted by mischief.
PRIEST: We resist the temptation to create mischief in the name of all that is good/sane.
DEMON: Sanity is not such a 'stable pedestal' on which to build proverbs.
PRIEST: I can prove to you that mischief is simply a 'state of mind.'
DEMON: If you can prove such a thing, I will depart and return to Hell.
PRIEST: Here is the proof --- children do nonviolent mischief and grow to become humble.
DEMON: I concede that nonviolent mischief in youngsters does not lead to anarchy...
PRIEST: You see, I have proven that mischief is simply a 'condition' (and not a foundation).
DEMON: Why then do Americans love cheeseburgers and pornography?
PRIEST: Convenience-consumerism creates room for indulgences of lifestyle, but not fate!
