Democrats want to shut the govt down.

Because its just a big spending bill with no attempts to reign in the spending

So Republicans want to shut down the government then, right?

amiright?

No, they want to offset the increase in spending with cuts to try to balance it out and keep us from going deeper in debt.

Why is that so wrong?
Because it's crisis spending and people in my state need the funds to rebuild their lives.

Spending cuts are a long-term problem that can be solved next week...next month...Disaster relief is needed now - as in, immediately.

So ya see, Republicans want to shut the govt down.

The cuts are to green energy not disaster relief. All Reid has to do is pass the bill and you get your money so why blame republicans? The bill is there right now as is the money. Its on Harry's shoulders now.

actually no - part of the cuts are to disaster relief. The House bill has far less disaster relief spending.

And I don't care where the remainder of the cuts come from - they have no place in a crisis spending bill. THeres no reason to hold hostage my fellow Vermonters wit Tea Party absurdity.

Just pass the Senate bill that was put on Boehner's desk a week ago. Then we can move on to debating budgets.

But clearly, the Republicans would rather shut down government than help my fellow Vermonters rebuild their lives.

When one chamber rejects another's bill it doesn't mean that either chamber is being obstructionist.

It doesn't make sense to offset disaster relief with spending offsets. Disasters are almost by definition unpredictable, and it doesn't make sense to alter spending on unrelated programs in response. The best policy would be to fund a disaster program that had a surplus in years with few disasters and a deficit in years with many disasters. Of course, such a fund would see its surpluses raided, so it wouldn't work that well in practice.

Both sides want disaster relief and both sides want to fund the government. Right now, we have one side that wants to fund the relief with deficit spending and one that wants to fund it with program cuts. If the question is "Who is preventing disaster relief?" the answer has to be "both sides" since either side could give in, which would result in disaster relief.

Jeeze. I thought the Reps were the obstructioinist party

You see the way it works is when the Republicans vote down a bill the Democrats send them, the Republicans are obstructing. When the Democrats vote down a bill the Republicans send them, the Republicans are still obstructing. You have to understand the mindset of the far left which is steeped in lies, deceit, and manipulation.

Dear Partisan Shill (named Dont Taz Me Bro),

You sound foolish when you state that only one side has all the answers or does all the lying.

The fact is, politics is a cutthroat game. Case and point? The Healthcare Bill. Obama wanted to pass it. Republicans tried to outvote it ...and the Bill passed through no other mechanism than brute force (having the most votes).

That's the way politics works. How do we apply that to this bill?

Democrats have the upper hand on a bill? The Republicans try to eek out the best, most ball-busting option they have. "If it has to pass, then don't just get budget cuts....get budget cuts that fuck Obama over by destroying jobs!"

At the end of the day, Republicans are just thinking "if we can just defeat Obama, then we can get the power back and do good things for the country. Doesn't matter how we do it."

So no, Republicans aren't the only obstructionists. They happen to be the current obstructionists.

Partisan shill? I'm a libertarian, idiot. I am simply stating exactly what has been happening all year, quite accurately. When the Republicans vote down a bill, the Democrats call them obstructionists. When the Democrats vote down a bill, the Democrats call Republicans obstructionists. Hell, they were accusing the GOP of obstructionism when the Dems had a supermajority and the GOP lacked the votes to even filibuster (ie. the health care bill you brought up, dumb ass.)

It's not my fault you want to stick your head in the sand when the ugly truth rears its own.

Why don't people in your state have home insurance?

Obviously not, since it's been a problem for years.

So ya see, Republicans want to shut the govt down.

I wish that were true. I'd love for it to shut down. Probably the only way we'll save any money.

They do!

In case you haven't been paying attention for the past 50 years, homeowners insurance doesn't cover flooding. THe only flood insurance available is the government's National Flood Insurance Program and the state's flooding was beyond 100-yr flood levels where most people would never consider buying it.

The healthcare law passed because Obama bought votes.

What a total waste of a post.

First, what do you mean by "bought"?
Second, is it in a way that other members of Congress, ones you prefer, have used before?

Third, way to side step the entire meat of the post. How about actually discussing things. I know that's not the usual for USMB, but let's pretend.

The Senate is currently voting to table the House spending bill that would allow the govt to remain open and continue functioning.

I guess the Democrats want the shut down in hopes that they can blame it on Republicans despite the fact that it is them that is doing it as we speak.

From the title the word blame was the first thing I thought of.

Libertarians curve to the right. Your bias is still showing.

My head's not in the sand. When you accuse one side of doing something that both sides do, you're either incorrect or willfully incorrect. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt.

Both sides call each other all kinds of names. If you think your enemy is the only one that does it, then you're compfuzed.

Geez, I wander who they might have learned that from?

And when you accuse one side of doing something that both sides do, you're still correct.

Feel free to quote me where I said Republicans never engage in obstructionism. I was responding specifically to the OP's point and very accurately portraying the Democrats' behavior. What I described is exactly what has been happening for the past three years.

Technically you're correct, but you weren't so even-handed in your earlier posts.
But if you're saying they both do it now, that's enough for me. Thanks!

Yeah.....all-of-a-sudden....Republicans are worried-about debt?
