Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a cricket field, at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard-long pitch with a wicket (a set of three wooden stumps) sited at each end. One team, designated the batting team, attempts to score as many runs as possible, whilst their opponents field. Each phase of play is called an innings. After either ten batsmen have been dismissed or a fixed number of overs have been completed, the innings ends and the two teams then swap roles. The winning team is the one that scores the most runs, including any extras gained, during their one or two innings (source of information: Wikipedia).

The highest 'governing body' of cricket, formed in 1909, is the International Cricket Council (ICC), which oversees the major tournaments including the Cricket World Cup, which has been won by the West Indies, India, Australia, Pakistan, and England.

The greatest cricket players of all time include Adam Gilchrist (Australia), Wally Hammond (England), Sanath Jaysuriya (Sri Lanka), Jacque Kallis (South Africa), Imran Khan (Pakistan), and Sunil Gavaskar (India).

Cricket is the only bat-and-ball game that rivals American baseball in popularity, though the two games are very very different, and for one thing, the bat cricket-players use is flat (not round like in baseball).

While cricket has been free from the problems of politics (unlike, say soccer, boxing, or chess), international games between nations in turmoil (e.g., India-Pakistan) serve as beacons of friendly relations, since the sport is considered a gentleman's competitive game.

Talking about this essentially non-American game brings nice attention to foreign culture in this age of television coverage.

I'd like to see a high-quality cricket video-game marketed for the XBox audience. If there was an outstanding cricket video game, the sport would receive much more attention from the international community and in America.

It's a terrific spectator-sport.

Imran to Sunny. Ball pitched on off; patted back down the wicket...no run.
