The shortage clearly puts the lie to the myth held by critics of U.S. farming practices that desperate unemployed U.S. citizens will do farm work if it is available to them. The Georgia Labor Department released a survey showing that unemployment in Irwin County, where blackberries are a major crop, is at 13 percent, yet very few people went to the fields. Of those who did, the overwhelming majority walked away.

The closest the article comes to saying what the wages are is that "these crops pay low piece wages" You sound like you are anti GOP so can I assume you are somewhat liberal? Do you think it is right for the farmers to pay crap lower than minimum wages to farm help so you can enjoy a 50cent peach just because the worker is illegal? Perhaps without the illegals to do the work for half price the farmers will have to now actually pay for the service they want to hire?

In GA they were paying $12 per hour and they couldn't get the lazy ignorant scum to get off thier deadbeat asses to come out to work. Cut off their benefits and they'll work quick enough.

The Georgia law, HB 87, which does not take effect until July 1, already has had an effect as farm workers are staying away for fear of racial profiling. Workers caught with phony documents could be fined up to $250,000 and get 15 years in prison — the same sentence for murder in Georgia.

and what does the democratic legislature in 2006 and the democratic governor passing these laws have to do with the GOP and how does any of that have anything to do with legal migrant workers?

One, NC Licenses will now require a valid social security number thus blocking illegal aliens from getting licenses in NC if the law is properly applied.

Two, starting Jan 1, 2007 all new hires in state government must be screened for legal presence or citizenship. The school systems have till March of 2007 to implement this change.

Three, the technical corrections bill (S 1523, page 18.) authorizes our local and state police to begin enforcing immigration laws!

Four, S 1896 places new laws in place regarding human trafficking!

these laws have been in place for 4 years, they were passed by democratics and they have had no effect on growers being able to atract legal migrant workers in any of that time.

1. Illegals don't have NC liscences anyway
2. Illegals could never work for the state
3. Every state has laws in place which allow properly trained local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws in cooperation with ICE, it's a fedral program
4. Human trafficking has always been illegal, now it's illegal to traffic in illegals too.
