Civil Disobedience

Yesterday, a new law went into effect in NC.
No smoking in restaurants.

There is a little place down the street from my house that I eat at often, and they have always allowed smoking.
I went there for a meal yesterday.
No ashtrays were on the table yesterday.
After my meal, I lit up a cigarette. My act of civil disobedience.
My waitress brought me more water while I was smoking and didn't say a word. 2 other waitresses saw me and didn't say a word. Probably half the patrons in the restaurant saw me and didn't say a word.

While I was sitting there (still smoking), I observed a couple come in. They looked around and saw me smoking They asked the waitress (same waitress I had) for a seat in the non-smoking section. She replied, "New law doesn't allow smoking in any restaurant, you can sit anywhere you want". She got a good tip.

It is only day one, so I probably can't keep this up for long, but I'm going to try.

I went to a different restaurant today. I’ve been going there about 12 years. They’ve always allowed smoking. After my meal, I lit up a cigarette. Paige (my waitress) came over and told me I couldn’t smoke. I handed her my glass and asked her for more water. I told her I’d take care of it when she got back. She returned quickly and our conversation went like this:

Paige: You can’t smoke, they passed a new law.
Me: I don’t agree with the law, do you?
Paige: No, but you can’t smoke.
Me: Do you know who Rosa Parks was?
Paige: Yes.
Me: Consider this my civil disobedience.
Paige: But…
Me: If any other customers ask me to put out my cigarette, I will.
Paige: You….
Me: Just ask them, if they want me to, I will.

Paige looked around and then announced, “Will somebody please ask this gentleman to put out his cigarette?”

Of the almost dozen customers in earshot, none of them asked me. In fact, the comments were things like, “doesn’t bother me”, “no”, “let him smoke”. One lady asked, “Did she bring you an ashtray?, she wouldn’t bring me one”. I felt sort of bad for putting Paige in that position. She looked at me and said, ‘Well, I can’t just yank it from your hand”. She walked off looking exasperated. I told the lady that asked about the ashtray that no, she hadn’t brought me one. Then I re-iterated to the people that I would put out the cigarette if it bothered anybody. Nobody asked me to, and some told me to stand up for what I believed.

The waitress was talking to the manager and he looked at me. When she walked away from him, he gave me a thumbs up. I noticed a lady at the opposite end of the restaurant glaring at me. I’m guessing because I was smoking. I took my last puff and winked at her. I put out the cigarette and handed Paige a $20 dollar bill for my $8 dollar dinner and told her the change was her tip for putting up with my antics.

As I put on my coat and hat to leave, the lady that had asked about the ashtray started clapping. Then others started clapping to. I tipped my hat to the folks and told them to have a great day as I walked out with an applause.

I don’t know how long I can get away with this before I get arrested or punched in the nose. I won’t smoke in a restaurant that was non-smoking before the law was passed, as that was the owner’s decision. But I’m going to be difficult where smoking used to be allowed.

Only immature selfish scum inflict their second hand smoke on people in areas where it is outlawed.
I hope you get the maximum jail term possible for your actions.

The maximum penalty is a $50 fine.
Guess what, I can afford that.

But, why are you against personal property rights?

But, why are you against personal property rights?

Personal property does not include the right to
Fire your gun at someone, even though the gun is your personal property.
Drive your car over someone, even though the car is your personal property.
or
Strike someone with your fist, even though your fist is part of your body.

I'm not against property rights; you can own a Gun or a Car, or even as many cigarettes as you please.
But I object to being shot, run over, or poisoned by your use of same.

If a person owns a restaurant, it is their personal property, they should be the one that decides whether or not they allow smoking, just like you decide whether or not to walk into their restaurant.
Your car spews more harmful pollutants than my cigarette ever will, better quit driving.

In all honesty, you'll get used to it, but I do understand. The worst is banning smoking in bars.
Not for the people who work in them. More tips and a safer more pleasant work place. Smokers are dinosaurs about to go extinct.

You will get used to it, it sucks at first. The first day here it was 10 degrees outside. the Bingo halls that raised money for Big Brothers and Sister and one that raised money for a special needs school both ended up shutting down. The Native American Casino's and Bingo halls of course benefitted from the law. :D
They also started fining bars that allowed smoking, and you also start to realize the smoke smell was covering up even worse smells.
Gee, I should get used to the government telling people what to do with their personal property.
Maybe they will give me some scraps from the table so I can really feel like a begging dog.
:eusa_boohoo:

Is there anything more pathetic than a nicotine junkie whining he can't light up? Go chew some tobacco and cry in your pillow.

Do you think standing up for rights should be against the law?

I think we ALL agree it should be the OWNERS CHOICE!

If you want to smoke, go to a place that allows it, if not, then don't. We still have that freedom in Indiana, for now. (In bars and pubs that is. If a place allows childen then no smoking allowed at all, if it does allow it you have to be 21 to enter)
Most owners would chose not to anyway. In my state most owners supported the ban along with the employees. The one who didn't were in the minority and have since discovered how beneficial it was to business. An increase in profits and less sick days taken by employees.

I've never understood why some people seem to think certain upper classes of society deserve protection from workplace hazards and others do not.

people are still assholes about you smoking too.
What do you expect? If you're enough of an asshole to smoke around other people expect to get treated like one.

Payback is a bitch.

People have a choice where they work.

Did the bus driver get in trouble because Rosa sat in the front seat?
Rosa would probably civil disobedience your ass too. For infringing on her civil right not to have to put up with your demented need to drug people with your smoke.
