Civil Disobedience

I always thought it should be the choice of the business owner.

If the owner, the employees and the patrons all smoke or don't care - why not?

This is one issue that the free market system should solve, not the government.
Except that's never the case. Most owners and employees, even if they smoke themselves, do not want to have to put up with and clean up after smokers.

Yesterday, a new law went into effect in NC.
No smoking in restaurants.

While I was sitting there (still smoking), I observed a couple come in. They looked around and saw me smoking They asked the waitress (same waitress I had) for a seat in the non-smoking section. She replied, "New law doesn't allow smoking in any restaurant, you can sit anywhere you want". She got a good tip.

It is only day one, so I probably can't keep this up for long, but I'm going to try.

Only immature selfish scum inflict their second hand smoke on people in areas where it is outlawed.
I hope you get the maximum jail term possible for your actions.
Me too! I'm even gonna cheer if he gets the electric chair.

Gee, I should get used to the government telling people what to do with their personal property.
Maybe they will give me some scraps from the table so I can really feel like a begging dog.
:eusa_boohoo:

Is there anything more pathetic than a nicotine junkie whining he can't light up? Go chew some tobacco and cry in your pillow.
Do you think standing up for rights should be against the law?
You are not standing up for rights. You are being petulant self centered drug addled crybaby.

I think we ALL agree it should be the OWNERS CHOICE!

If you want to smoke, go to a place that allows it, if not, then don't. We still have that freedom in Indiana, for now. (In bars and pubs that is. If a place allows childen then no smoking allowed at all, if it does allow it you have to be 21 to enter)
Most owners would chose not to anyway. In my state most owners supported the ban along with the employees. The one who didn't were in the minority and have since discovered how beneficial it was to business. An increase in profits and less sick days taken by employees.

I've never understood why some people seem to think certain upper classes of society deserve protection from workplace hazards and others do not.

People have a choice where they work.
Slavery was outlawed years ago.
Lame and lamer.

Thankfully most smokers try hard not to harm people with their smoke. It's just the odd ball cracked pot who thinks that whining and throwing hissy fits because he can't get away with obnoxious behavior anymore who gives smokers a bad name.

The maximum penalty is a $50 fine.
Guess what, I can afford that.

But, why are you against personal property rights?

Personal property does not include the right to
Fire your gun at someone, even though the gun is your personal property.
Drive your car over someone, even though the car is your personal property.
or
Strike someone with your fist, even though your fist is part of your body.

I'm not against property rights; you can own a Gun or a Car, or even as many cigarettes as you please.
But I object to being shot, run over, or poisoned by your use of same.

Here's a thought. Why don't you take responsibility for your own health and walk away from him, instead of expecting everyone else to adjust their lives to accommodate your lazy ass?

But that would mean he would be forced to leave and thus accommodate those around him.

Nope much easier to treat smokers like they have some incurable disease and quarantine them off from as much of life as possible (and have the nerve to still accuse smokers of being inconsiderate).

Source or STFU.

It should still be the owner's damn choice, if the employees don't like dealing with the smoke they can leave. Nothing is forcing them to work there, absolutely nothing.

You will get used to it, it sucks at first. The first day here it was 10 degrees outside. the Bingo halls that raised money for Big Brothers and Sister and one that raised money for a special needs school both ended up shutting down. The Native American Casino's and Bingo halls of course benefitted from the law. :D
They also started fining bars that allowed smoking, and you also start to realize the smoke smell was covering up even worse smells.

Why yes that would be people too damn lazy to walk away from something that bothers them and instead want the government to take away other peoples rights so that they don't have to deal with it.

Here's a thought, why don't I have the right to throw hand grenades out my car window as I drive past crowded sidewalks, with a variable time of 30 seconds before they explode, because if the lazy asses are worried about their health, they can just get out of the way and then won't interfere with my right to do as I please with my private property?

restaurant owners are Free to change their establishment to a bar and thus evade ordinances against smoking in restaurants.
Smokers are Free to go to their cars and light up.
I someone dislikes a aw they should face to penalties for violating it, but this law is NOT an infringement on civil liberties, so violating it does not make one Rosa Parks. It just makes them another criminal who should be treated as such.

I'm not a smoker but my husband is. He smokes in the garage and everything in there stinks like an ashtray. It's gross. And his car? Nicotine clings to everything and driving his car is not fun because that too smells like an ashtray. I can't figure out why people smoke, well except for that addiction thing. And eating in restaurants when people are smoking is really gross, I don't like it at all.

Having said all of that . . . what gives the government the right to come along an say 'nope, you can't do that here'? Why shouldn't it be left up to the owner to decide if his establishment is smoke-free or not? If enough patrons complain and say 'hey, I'm not going to eat here if people smoke', he can make a decision based on that. Who the hell is uncle to come along and tell someone how to run their business? Ooo, second hand smoke and all. So? Don't like it, don't eat there. Now there's rumblings of people not being allowed to smoke if there are kids in the car? Can't you feel that noose getting tighter and tighter? Guess you like the feel of choking.

In both Ireland and the UK, when the smoking ban came in, bars and restaurants were hit hard. In the UK, an average of 7 pubs are closing every week. Some of those may be recession hit but EU evidence suggests that the ban hits these businesses hard.

I am a non smoker but I have no objection to other people choosing to smoke. I am supportive of owners choice. A ban is an infrigement of our liberty. I find it kind of sad that non smokers are happy to stand by and watch while the rights of others are trampled on.

I always thought it should be the choice of the business owner.

Me also.
Seems some people want the government to decide what people do with their personal establishments.

You are aware that the State Government of North Carolina is run by the Democrats? That a Republican Legislature has not existed since Reconstruction days? They came close a few years ago for 2 years the House was evenly divided.

I can't believe you just compared terrorism to smoking, you really are getting desperate. Here's the thing though people can use their property if it doesn't hurt others, yeah second hand smoke might hurt but only those in the immediate vicinity, which means either party can move slightly and not bother the other.

restaurant owners are Free to change their establishment to a bar and thus evade ordinances against smoking in restaurants.

You call that free? Yeah you're free to use your business as you please just as long as you change the fundamental nature of your business.

Give me one good reason why restaurants shouldn't be allowed to have smokers and bars could.

Smokers are Free to go to their cars and light up.

Black people are free to ride the bus just as long as they sit in the back.

Seriously give me one good reason why smokers should put up with that bullshit.

I someone dislikes a aw they should face to penalties for violating it, but this law is NOT an infringement on civil liberties,

You are either lying or a complete idiot I'm not sure which at this point. How is the right to allow smoking on your premise not a civil liberty?

so violating it does not make one Rosa Parks. It just makes them another criminal who should be treated as such.

Why yes because smoking in a place where the owner has given you permission is completely on par with petty theft or vandalism.:cuckoo:

Both parties suck and try to infringe on civil liberties. They're just not always after the same ones.

I quit smoking 12years ago. My gf and her daughter smoke{they live here} I am tired of being told what I can and cannot do. You that oppose smoking, Cool I can live with that. Wait until you cant have a drink in a resturant with your dinner, because your drinking may cause an accident or maybe your just an asshole who talks to loud and voices thier opinon wether any one wants to hear it or not. Bet you will scream like a bitch if that gets taken away from you. JMO

Yesterday, a new law went into effect in NC.
No smoking in restaurants.

There is a little place down the street from my house that I eat at often, and they have always allowed smoking.
I went there for a meal yesterday.
No ashtrays were on the table yesterday.
After my meal, I lit up a cigarette. My act of civil disobedience.
My waitress brought me more water while I was smoking and didn't say a word. 2 other waitresses saw me and didn't say a word. Probably half the patrons in the restaurant saw me and didn't say a word.

While I was sitting there (still smoking), I observed a couple come in. They looked around and saw me smoking They asked the waitress (same waitress I had) for a seat in the non-smoking section. They've only just now done this in your state? Been in affect for 2 years here (MN).

My two cents. Smoking is a really awful, smelly, disgusting habit and a major drain on cash. Should there be laws telling private citizens what they can allow on their private property? HELL NO!

Nothing better than the smoking bans. Best legislation ever passed

For 150 years we had to breathe the smokers air.......now he has to breathe ours

And how will you feel when legislation is passed that prevents you from doing or allowing something on your property that you actually do care about? Can you say hypocrit?
