First US fuel efficiency rules for heavy-duty trucks, unveiled Tuesday, are embraced by trucking firms, manufacturers, and environmentalists. They'll cut fuel consumption and carbon emissions.


Coming on the heels of the administration's move to require better mileage for cars and light trucks, the new standards for heavy trucks are calculated to save 530 million barrels of oil, cut $50 billion from fuel costs, and slash greenhouse gas emissions by about 270 million tons over the lifetimes of trucks built from 2014 to 2018.

The standards call for commercial trucks to reduce by up to 20 percent fuel consumption and pollution emissions, beginning with 2014 models. Heavy-duty pickups and vans, a separate class of vehicles, will need to curb fuel use and emissions to achieve up to a 15 percent reduction by 2018. So-called "vocational vehicles," such as garbage trucks or fire engines, will have to cut emissions and fuel use by about 10 percent by 2018.

The design error was part and parcel to Ford being forced to build shitboxes like the Pinto, rather than cars that people wanted like the Galaxy 500.

All these decrees from on high are going to do is force people to get killed, in favor of their twisted social engineering schemes.

God, stupidity has no limits. The design error was not an error. The lack of a cover over the gas tank of the Pinto was known to be a danger in event of being hit from the rear. The bean counters at Ford thought that the resultant lawsuits for wrongful deaths would be less than the savings of about $10 per vehicle to leave the tank uncovered. It was a case of corperate greed, not government regulation. In fact, there should have been someone from the government telling Ford that you cannot build such a dangerous vehicle.

Fuel efficiency should be controlled by the market place. Higher fuel prices=higher food prices. Sad that more people are going to be forced to choose between pills and food because of this. Makes me sick!

Mathew, no matter what, higher fuel prices are the future. A finite amount of oil that is inexpensive, and an increasing demand. The only way to keep the demand from skyrocketing the price of fuel is to create very much more efficient vehicles of all sizes.

Resources such as tar sands are many times more expensive to extract than the oil that we have traditionally drilled for. More costly in terms of money and environment.

Had we had wise government, we would have had stringent fuel efficiency standards set in the 90s.

CAFE, however, gave us underpowered, thrown-together, crumbling shitboxes like the K-car, Mustang II, and Chevette...All of which were death traps in their own right.

But as long as we "save" a few paltry gallons of gasoline (for whom I have no idea) it's all good to go around dictating to automakers what kind of cars to build, huh?
