O’Reilly said that Chafee is confusing the issue arguing that a prayer is clearly religious while a Christmas tree is not a religious symbol. O’Reilly called the tree a “secular” Christmas tree and noted that the White House even has a Christmas tree. Chafee noted that it’s a “White House tree” but O’Reilly played proof that Barack Obama, who he called Chafee’s guy, calls it a Christmas tree.

Christmas is based on Yule. Christmas traditions and the Christmas Tree are all based on Pagan Rituals that have nothing to do with Christ.

who the fuck cares.

You do enough to have taken a look. Now an opinion, that would require you to read and think. We know that's foreign to you. So, move on...

I care. As do most of the people in R.I.

We, who believe and cherish, our traditions, are very sad to watch them go by the wayside by a secular progression of ideas that socialism represents.

I have this feeling that o. hates calling a tree, a Christmas tree, too, but is doing it to be PC, and only for the time being.

It's a pagan tree. End of debate.

Pagan Origins

Dating back centuries before Christ, cultures brought evergreen trees, plants, and leaves into their homes upon the arrival of the winter solstice, which occurs in the northern hemisphere between December 21st and 22nd. Although the specific practices were different in each country and culture, the symbolization was generally the same: to celebrate the return of life at the beginning of winter's decline.

Egyptians particularly valued evergreens as a symbol of life's victory over death. They brought green date palm leaves into their homes around the time of the winter solstice.

Romans had a public festival called Saturnalia, which lasted one week beginning on December 17th, and included a variety of celebrations around the winter solstice. Curiously, the Roman winter solstice was marked on December 25th on the Julian calendar. These celebrations are thought to have merged with pagan practices of hanging mistletoe and the burning of the Yule log.

In Britain, the Yule log was originally seen as a magical amulet, and eventually made it into the hand's of Father Christmas. In Italy the Yule log is still burned for the "Festa di Ceppo". In Catalonia, the log is wrapped in a blanket until Christmas Eve, when it's unwrapped and burned for the custom of "fer cagar el tio". And in Serbia, families bring the Yule log (known as a "badnjak") into their homes on Christmas Eve to be burned along with prayers to God to bring happiness, luck, and riches.

Druid priests in Great Britain also used evergreen plants and mistletoe in pagan ceremonies, and the mistletoe plant was the symbol of the birth of a god. Celtic Druids and Norseman of Scandinavia also used mistletoe in a mysterious ceremony just after the winter solstice.

In the mid 1500's, Germans began using evergreen trees as a symbol of hope for the coming of spring. This practice is likely to have gradually evolved from pagan rituals of past, and merged with the celebration of Christmas leading to the tree's Christian beginnings.

Any pussies worried about their traditions being downplayed should take counter measures and play them up harder, on your own time, with your own family. Traditions that break are just not strong.

Xmas has rapidly transformed from a religious occasion to a full blown commercial event.

The dollar holiday is far from dead. I find it amusing that those that claim to be the champions of free enterprise and unregulated capitalism should want to assign a moral or religious association to what is now purely a scam to keep the economy strong at the end of the calender year. Ya'll should just leave christmas alone to be what it will be. All kinds of people celebrate the December moneygrab ... Arabs...Jews.. Atheists.. At this point Christians having anything to say about the christmas agenda is like a flea trying to steer an elephant by the tail.

It used to be a christian celebration of the birth of christ but the crazy christians let it slip out of their hands and into the control of manufacturers and importers of crap. And now that most of the christmas crap is made in china it isn't really a great benefit to the USA anymore. A lot of dollars race around but end up overseas. Our country only gets to keep a rather modest slice of the pie as almost everything is on sale.

We'd keep more money in country if daddy just went out and blew the christmas cash on hookers.

Yeah I found it really funny as he tried to squirm out of being dead wrong. He denied that Obama called the WH tree a Christmas tree. Then when he was proven wrong his only response was to say "well times are changing" As if to say all you people out there that like Christmas and call it a Christmas tree simply need to get with the program and call it what we want you to call it.

I also think Bill has it closest to right when it comes to Christianity. It is not an organized Church. It's just the Philosophy, around which hundreds of different churches have been built.

I simply will never understand people who oppose Christmas. A Christmas tree is not a religious symbol, In fact it has nothing to do with Christianity at all, and Christmas is a Federal Holiday that promotes tolerance, giving and good will. What is there to hate?

O'Reilly had a debate the night before over Christianity. O'Reilly correctly maintained it was not a religion. It's not. Roman Catholic, Jewish, etc., are religions.

Christianity is a philosophy/ideology, not an organized religion.

Right now the left wants to eliminate Christmas, a few days ago it was Thanksgiving. It will be Mother's Day, Father's Day, Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, Easter, Valentine's Day and certainly the 4th of July. As nearly as can be calculated, there are only two holidays that are liberal approved. New Years and Cinco De Mayo, both of which are centered, not around joy, or family, or love, but getting as drunk as humanly possible.

You know when all is said and done...the left really are a bunch of miserable, whiny bastards always trying to impose their will on others.

This issue is a non-issue in reality. You don't like a T.V. show...change the channel.

You don't like calling it a Chritmas tree...don't. But don't tell others that they can't.

In leftylibturd world....no one can call it a Christmas tree merely because a few uptight assholes feign being "offended".

They don't believe in God, they don't go to church but the fact that it's called a "Christ"mas tree gives them a cause to bitch about.

As each year passes I see that which I have enjoyed and love be treated in a hateful manner.

I have volunteered playing music for years during this season in the public elementary schools my son attends. I have to submit a play list to be reviewed, which I normally do not mind, but this not for dirty words and such but to see if Christmas tree is mentioned. It appears that the children want the non religious holiday music , but, the parents do not. One year I said, "instead of playing Santa Baby I could play Satan Baby". They relented and the kids had a great time and no one was "injured" in any way.

This year I am having a Christmas party open house for my son's friends, grade and the teachers at my home and will play whatsoever the hell I want....
