Chafee in 'Holiday' Tree Debate

Ever heard of a “Surprise Tree Lighting” before?

30-minute notice given for RI state tree lighting - News - Boston.com

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Gov. Lincoln Chafee pulled a festive fast one Thursday, lighting the Statehouse Christmas tree with only 30 minutes’ notice to prevent protesters angry about him calling the fir a ‘‘holiday tree’’ from crashing the party.

Thursday’s hastily called and sparsely attended tree lighting was in stark contrast to what Chafee called the ‘‘chaos’’ of last year’s ceremony, in which critics of his seasonal semantics interrupted a children’s choral performance with their own rendition of ‘‘O Christmas Tree.’’

I would love to have heard the radio traffic as Gov. Linc went to Christmas DefCon 1 “Execute Operation Hide The Santa NOW! T-minus 30…GO!GO!GO!”

What I love about Gov. Chafee’s continued crank-stomping is that he clearly doesn’t realize how much more stupid he is making himself by trying to avoid Christmas than he would if he just went out, wished everyone a “Merry Christmas!” and proudly joined in a chorus of “Joy To The World.”

Speaking of which…

‘‘Last year unfortunately this event turned into a very disrespectful gathering,’’ Chafee told reporters seconds before flipping the switch that lit the 17-foot tree in the Statehouse rotunda. ‘‘So let’s light the tree, go and greet the performers and have a very merry holiday season.’’

And a “merry holiday season” to you, too, Gov. Scrooge.

The guy is a total tool. Loser.

I dont celebrate christmas in a religious way, but I do celebrate it. It's been commercialized and Americanized, if they're even different, and I oblige it.

Which is fine. How people choose to address the holiday is up to them.

There was no need for this behavior by the government. He is appeasing a minute amount of malcontents who feel it is their obligation to mess with Christmas at every level. They are idiots in every sense of the word and this Governor played right into their idiocy.

He's doing the right thing.

The Government showing preference to one segment of a Country is not right. Thjey're not there to play certain religions over others in a Public, i.e. Official fashion.

It's wrong, and it's prejudiced. Once they can celebrate all Holidays equally as a public policy, we'll talk but that's not what has occured and because of that, correcting the course is the right way to go.

You don't need xmas to be exploited by public officials for you to celebrate and enjoy it, you shouldn't anyways. If you do, you're doing it wrong with all due respect.

All of those that want to call it a Christmas tree..........call it a christmas tree and celebrate christmas in your household like you desire.
Those that want to call it a Holiday tree...............call it a Holiday tree and celebrate the Holiday how they want too celebrate
o'reilly is a self-serving big mouth.

O’Reilly said that Chafee is confusing the issue arguing that a prayer is clearly religious while a Christmas tree is not a religious symbol. O’Reilly called the tree a “secular” Christmas tree and noted that the White House even has a Christmas tree. Chafee noted that it’s a “White House tree” but O’Reilly played proof that Barack Obama, who he called Chafee’s guy, calls it a Christmas tree.

I also dont get the notion that people cant actually, at the SAME TIME, do both of these:

-Love and celebrate Christmas.

-Not want it Favored by Publicly elected officials.

There is no debate. If the people there gave a shit what the tree was called they would elect someone else.

who the fuck cares.

You do enough to have taken a look. Now an opinion, that would require you to read and think. We know that's foreign to you. So, move on...

I care. As do most of the people in R.I.

We, who believe and cherish, our traditions, are very sad to watch them go by the wayside by a secular progression of ideas that socialism represents.

I have this feeling that o. hates calling a tree, a Christmas tree, too, but is doing it to be PC, and only for the time being.

take it as you wish, but it, the Christmas tree has nothing what so ever to do with Jesus Christ or Christianity. Neither does Christmas lights, kissing Under the Mistletoe, snowmen The Grinch, or Jack Frost.

You make a good point which is also the point that applies to Obama. If the Libs cared about the nation they wouldn't need to blame the GOP for the fiscal cliff. They wouldn't have sent Bozo's grandson back to the WH.

It's a tree GT! My town decorates with a tree, wreaths and lights all over, paid for by town revenue. What people think or are celebrating while in the presence of these decorations is irrelevant. Celebrate whatever suits you or ignore it all if that is your choice.

There is nothing about these decorations that is religious in nature.

Oh and by the way, Holiday Tree. Guess where the word Holiday is derived from folks?

Just another way for the right wing to show their power. The way they try to hang on to preaching christian values and tradition makes them feel good about themselves.
I see not real substance in most of them.

It's a Christmas Tree, Christmas was Religious in Nature and it's a ruse to pretend that it's not about Christmas.

Nobody cares about a tree, they care that we're pitting Religions (still) in 2012 against each other in Public office.

It's wrong, and to maliciously go after the people who say so is wrong as well.

There are no prayers. There is nothing but an evergreen tree being decorated and lit.

A holiday tree is by etymology a Holy Tree. Is that okay?

I'm sure with a little digging one can turn Mardi Gras into a religious issue. The media lives for this. For that matter, Halloween is religious as well.

the etymology of the word doesn't matter - it's lost in translation and Americanized. That's reality. Nobody (well, maybe a few do) thinks "Holy Day!" when the word "Holiday" is said. It's 2012.

The evergreen tree is being decorated and lit as is traditionally done in America to celebrate CHRISTMAS. Being obtuse about it doesn't change the Public-$$ favortism.

The outcry because he chooses to call it a holiday tree, as to be inclusive of all religions, instead of a Christmas tree, is really childish.

And even people who love and celebrate Christmas, would agree. Imagine that.

I want to be clear here. The word Christmas must now be banned from the public square say some? Holiday as a word is okay even though it is derived from the Holy Day? You do realize these are words that are fair to use in the public square and that the word Christmas does not in itself create a moment of prayer or an endorsement of anything.
