Caribbean Island Says Goodbye Fossil Fuels, Hello 100% Renewable Electricity
Bonaire (pop. 14,500), a small island off the coast of Venezuela, is famous for its beautiful marine reefs, which are visited by 70,000 tourists every year. What many of the tourists don’t realize is that the majority of the electricity powering their needs comes from renewable energy. Yet for the residents of Bonaire, the switch from fossil-fueled to renewable energy systems has made a world of difference.

Like many Caribbean islands, Bonaire originally relied on diesel fuel to generate electricity for residents, with a peak demand of 11 megawatts (MW). This fuel had to be shipped in from other nations, resulting in high electricity prices for Bonaire residents, along with uncertainty about when and how much prices might increase with changing fuel costs.

Another place goes all renewables! Also remember, Oregon is 70% renewables, hydro, wind, solar, geothermal!

Hydro kills fish.

WHERE in Hell IS your sense of environmental justice?

Not really, There's safe guards on modern hydro. One day we're going to be forced to go over to hydro, nuclear, wind and solar as we will be taped out of fossil fuels.

Let's just say...Oregon will have electricy when you're in the dark in the deep south!

And windmills kill birds.

But only as a hobby?

Personally I couldn't give a rat's ass but you leftist greenies are abandoning your basics!

And so does coal, natural gas and oil. Add on top all the humans that have a shorter live because of the air pollution.

I am not an environmental leftist, but I realize we're better off having a percentage of our energy needs shifted away from fossil fuels for reasons to have to the fact that they're finite.

To do that will require a huge government investment. And more taxes. And the 'Conservatives' will fight any kind of taxes unless they are for killing people.

But not to worry. Already in many areas of this nation, solar is cheaper than dirty coal, far cheaper than coal with scrubbers. That is without subsidies considered. And wind is about 1/2 the cost of dirty coal. And the grid scale batteries are already starting to come online. Coal is will be dead in less than a generation. And natural gas, for electrical generation, a generation after that. And we will all be healthier for the change.

"Conservatives" have no problem with taxes that are offset by spending cuts.

It just occurred to me- I have yet to administer your first official brotch-slap. :slap:

Consider it a badge of honor.

Ah , yes , nice point about "conservatives" : don't tax me ... unless you'll use my money to do some killing.

Though probably the most appropiate term should be "liberal conservatives" as paradoxical as it may sound.

So how are electricity prices now in Bonaire?

"The Bonaire system also includes 14 MW of diesel generation"

They have more diesel generator capacity now than they did before they "switched" to "renewables."

What a hoot!
