California Bill for Automatic Voter Registration Advances

Given that California belongs to Democrats lock, stock and barrel, I'm not certain what difference this will make. Who knows, maybe there's a truckload of conservatives out here who just never registered? :dunno:

As Her Thighness Clinton would say, "what difference does it make"? It's ultimately up to me if I want to vote or not. Within that decision requires me to register. Want to vote.... register.... Don't want to vote.... don't

Government needs to but out

Ballot Access News - California Bill for Automatic Voter Registration Advances

On August 27, the California Senate Appropriations Committee passed AB 1461, the bill to provide that all adult citizens known to the state should be automatically registered to vote. Such individuals would be informed that they had become registered, and would be given a chance to opt out...

...The bill is likely to pass. It had passed the Assembly on June 2. The Republican leader in the Assembly, Kristin Olsen, had voted “No” but now she appears to support it, according to remarks she made at a public meeting on August 19.

Interesting and positive development. That would make California and Oregon the first two states that I know of to approach the issue of automatic voter registration.

Sounds like a good, solid idea to me, since it promotes Democracy.

If it says nothing about citizenship --- then it's probably Unconstitutional.. Both under Federal and existing state law. So if it REALLY allows Mexican consulate papers for instance --- there's no concern at all for a citizenship requirement. This is part of the "no human being is illegal" meme.. And a general prescription for loss of sovereignty.. Just GIVE Cali back to Mexico... It's beyond fixing..

Ignorance is no excuse for stupidity.

You would be amazed to learn that other 1st world nations exist and they do automatic voter registration. It works like a top.

Well,a top requires SPIN......

Seriously though, what countries are you talking about. Please only list countries with at least 300 million population. Thanks in advance!

Why 300 million as a requirement? What does that mean, and why would that be important?

Germany has 82 million people and is, in terms of landmass, the size of Montana.

In Germany, voters are automatically registered and informed of their polling place. They bring their voting postcard, their national ID and they go and vote. Because Germany has a national ID system, people who are not citizens are NOT automatically registered. Safe, clean, effective, a minimum of paperwork, ZERO fraud.

It works like a top.
But you don't want people to have to show ID to vote here.... LO fucking L

Oh, but you just lied out your ass.

I have REPEATEDLY stated here in USMB that I am FOR voter-id. I have always been. In fact, I am for a national citizen ID that looks exactly like a person's passport card. That would solve a lot of problems immediately.

Learn to read so that you don't look so stupid.

I openly challenge you to find even one single posting of mine where I speak against voter ID. Good luck with that one.
Then I stand corrected....
Sorry that I lumped you with all the other Libbies that want illegals voting.

I am for stronger voter-ID laws than most Conservatives themselves.

There should be a national ID system in the USA, in all 50 states, DC AND in the terroritories (for the primaries). Every other 1st world nation does this. We already have a Social Security system, so the US government is already tracking statistics on the entire population, anyway.

When a child is born, you bring the birth certificate from your child and a piece of documentation that proves your address to a local post office, you fill out a one page form for a national id card, which would have EXACTLY the same number as your passport would have in the future. That card would be updated every 10 years, just like a passport. Within 10 years, the system would work like a top and would make the work for the US passport agencies far easier. You kill two birds with one stone.

When you turn 18, you are automatically registered to vote and given information on the nearest polling place. But, in order to be able to actually vote, you MUST bring your national ID card and at least one form of proof of current address with you, otherwise, no deal. No need to bring a birth certificate, because the national ID card can only be obtained when you send in a birth certificate, anyway.

This would reduce any chance of fraud to absolutely ZERO and the game would be the same for every single citizen.

I will again remind that one state in the Union does absolutely no voter registration at all and requires absolutely no ID at the polls in any way: North Dakota, a ruby-red state.

So, before Righties continually scream about practically nonexistent voter fraud, they should fix their own goddamned problem in North Dakota. Only the dear Lord knows how much voter fraud may have happened there.

:D

I disagree. It's an outstanding idea. Other civilized nations do this, with great benefits: much higher voter turnout, streamlined paperwork, you name it.

Other nations? Didn't know they existed when establishing law and order

Deemed irrelevant

If we had a similar system I'd be all for it. The Germans verify Identity and citizenship.

We don't do that in California or in the US. We have it bassackwards. We aren't allowed to ask for ID when registering or when voting! We're on the honor system!

It's not just in California either. The SCOTUS just threw out laws in Kansas and Arizona the required voters to prove citizenship when they registered. Supreme Court Throws Out Arizona, Kansas Voter ID Appeal

I wanted a large country as an example because I am sick to death of people using Norway with it's tiny 6 million population as an example of all that is great with democratic socialism.

See: posting 45.

Also, the population of a country really plays no role in this. A database can handle 100,000 or 1,000,000,000 just as effectively.

I could go for something close to that, I suppose.

I could go for something close to that, I suppose.

It's clean, it's efficient and it is no more government intrusion than we already have.

I am also a big supporter of nationwide 14 day, but only 14 day early voting, across the board. None of this 30 days before. Again, with a national id card and proof of residence turned in with an early vote, the chances of any fraud at all, intended or unintended, goes down to zero.
