Buffalo's first snowstorm of the season could give the area a year's worth of snow — around 8 feet — in just three days.

More than 5 feet of snow was already on the ground Wednesday, and another round of lake-effect snow is forecast to bring an additional 3 feet of snow to the Buffalo area on Thursday and Friday. The average snowfall for an entire year: 93.6 inches, or close to 8 feet.

"This is a historic event. When all is said and done, this snowstorm will break all sorts of records, and that's saying something in Buffalo," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said during a visit to the city.

Christopher Burt, a weather historian with the Weather Underground, said this Lake Erie snowstorm "will go down as the most extreme on record."

Good to know that the US is earth as you know it. Fortunately, there are those of us who understand that the US only makes up about 2% of the total surface of the earth. Bet you had no clue that the southern hemisphere is in the middle of another heat wave. Talked to a buddy of mine in Australia the other day. He said it was 45 degrees there and had been for most of the week. And since you probably aren't quite smart enough to figure it out, that would be 45 degrees celsius.

Heat Wave Kills 32 Elderly People in Brazil

SAO PAULO – The heat wave besetting most of Brazil with temperatures above 40 C (104 F) has killed 32 elderly people in just two days in the city of Santos, in the southwestern state of Sao Paulo, the municipal Health Secretariat said Wednesday.

The victims, who died on Monday and Tuesday, ranged in age from 65 to 90 and all of them suffered from chronic health problems such as diabetes, hypertension and heart difficulties.

Dehydration caused by the intense heat could have aggravated the victims’ preexisting problems as well, the secretariat said.

Of the 32 people, 17 died at their homes, while the other 15 expired in health centers where they had been admitted.
