High european immigration during the turn of the century and onwards, certainly cost them a great opportunity, as factories could hire immigrant europeans with less complaints from local whites.


Without that, blacks would have been in the factories in much greater numbers, much earlier to benefit from the massive increases in productivity and wages over the next couple of generations.
