Labour MP Tom Watson retweeted a message which said: “Birmingham is home of Black Sabbath and other terrifying Muslim musicians. #FoxNewsFacts.”

And even ITN newsreader Alastair Stewart, joined in “If you do not clean your finger-nails regularly, potatoes will grow in your stomach, crush your lungs & suffocate you. #FoxNewsFacts,” he wrote.

He added: “There will be senior managers in Fox News who don't get what all the fuss is about, nor understand the humour.”

Muslim vigilantes jailed for 'sharia law' attacks in London
Three members of 'Muslim Patrol' terrorised couple for holding hands, abused woman over her clothing and attacked drinkers

Three members of a self-styled "Muslim Patrol" vigilante group have been jailed for harassing, intimidating and assaulting people on the streets of east London while claiming they were enforcing sharia law.

A judge at the Old Bailey had heard that Jordan Horner, 19, Ricardo MacFarlane, 26, and a 23-year-old man who cannot be named for legal reasons, had terrorised a couple for walking through Bethnal Green holding hands, told a woman in Stepney that she would be punished in "hellfire" because of the way she was dressed, and attacked a group of men who were drinking in Shoreditch.

Horner – who has previously said he wants to bring sharia law to Britain – was jailed for a total of 17 months after pleading guilty to two charges of assault and two charges of using threatening words and behaviour.

MacFarlane was sentenced to 12 months in prison after pleading guilty to affray, while the 23-year-old received a six-month sentence after pleading guilty to affray.

Passing sentence on Friday, Judge Rebecca Poulet QC told them that while Islam was a peaceful religion, their conduct was "unfortunately anything but".

"One of the many good things about living in Great Britain is the tolerance and respect members of the public generally show to one another's religious beliefs, his dress or his chosen way of life.

Those riots shocked me profoundly. But they also shocked Britain. The Labour government commissioned a report into the violence by a local-government official called Ted Cantle. And he came to a conclusion that, although the racist far right had played a role in stirring up tension, the underlying cause of the riots was Asian and white residents living "parallel lives". Such was the geographical segregation between the two communities, found Cantle, that these places were like a sea of petrol, just waiting for a spark to set them alight. That finding was difficult enough to absorb for those such as myself who had assumed that Britain was fundamentally well-integrated, where people of different backgrounds, by and large, rubbed along fine. But what another local-government bigwig, Lord Ouseley, had to say about the violence was even more uncomfortable. He wrote a report arguing that what we had seen was "self-segregation": Asians had chosen to live apart from the white community.

Frightened whites in Bradford's 'two worlds'

A study by Philip Lewis, an adviser to the Anglican Bishop of Bradford, was also published yesterday. Mr Lewis gave a warning of young Muslims aspiring to be "hard men" to make up for educational under-achievement.

"There is a general failure of traditional Muslim leadership, religious and political, to connect with the world of British Muslim youth," he states.

Young Muslims were importing the clan and caste systems of the Indian sub-continent as the basis of local hierarchies.

  • The head of a Muslim charity has blamed low attainment among children from Pakistani families on the amount of time they spend at the mosque.
Dr Mohammed Ali, chief executive of Bradford-based charity, Quest for Economic Development, said pupils neglected homework and after-school clubs because they spent hours praying or attending Islamic schools.
