Who in their right mind would support going to jail for 30 days for cursing a judge?

That's not even legal.

Do you support this madness?

its called contempt of court. Courts are the proving grounds for both criminal and civil justice. In order for them to function the judge as the arbiter between the parties (state and defendant or plantiff vs. defendant) must have total control of thier courtroom, including the ability to punish those who do not follow the rules, or disrespect the court during its session.

Its very legal. she could have cursed out the judge after leaving, she could also file a grievence with the local court system if she felt like complaining.

What she did was not to disrespect the judge, but the court. 30 days should learn her a bit.

There are two big rules in life, DONT PROVOKE THE BORG, and dont piss off a judge when he is presiding in his courtroom.

Was it legal for the judge to raise her bail as punishment?

That was the reason for her cursing at him, and subsequently the reason for her getting jailed.

We are a nation of laws, not emotions.

The Judge does not have carte blanche...he's not a damn king.

That was illegal.

Any lawyer worth a dime would tell you that.

For contempt of court he can do alot more than that. She was being a flippy (and probably drugged up) nit, laughing and not taking it seriously. She could have walked away, but she flipped him off and cursed at him. YOU DO NOT DO THAT TO A JUDGE.

And there are plenty of laws for contempt of court.

From wikipedia:

Contempt of court - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In particular:

Under American jurisprudence, acts of contempt are divided into direct or indirect and civil or criminal. Direct contempt occurs in the presence of a judge; civil contempt is "coercive and remedial" as opposed to punitive. In the United States, relevant statutes include 18 USC 401-403 and Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 42.[10]

Direct contempt is that which occurs in the presence of the presiding judge (in facie curiae) and may be dealt with summarily: the judge notifies the offending party that he or she has acted in a manner which disrupts the tribunal and prejudices the administration of justice. After giving the person the opportunity to respond, the judge may impose the sanction immediately.
Indirect contempt occurs outside the immediate presence of the court and consists of disobedience of a court's prior order. Generally a party will be accused of indirect contempt by the party for whose benefit the order was entered. A person cited for indirect contempt is entitled to notice of the charge and an opportunity for hearing of the evidence of contempt and, since there is no written procedure, may or may not be allowed to present evidence in rebuttal.

Apparently MarcATL has no clue what contempt of Court means, and he thinks piss-pots should not be held accountable for their moronic and disgraceful actions.

What would the left do without the Soros funded tax exempt "news hounds" that monitors Fox "so you won't have to"? Post Huffington junk?

Yet another skirmish in the tedious Culture Wars, and the social right’s inane notion that we’ve become an ‘immoral’ Nation, and are thus suffering the consequences.

O’Reilly sympathized with the Florida judge, saying he was clearly fed up with an atmosphere where people feel they can get away with anything. O’Reilly blamed the public school system, and New York schools in particular, for softening their discipline codes and letting children get away with telling off teachers in the classroom.
And here we see the authoritarian right, the conservative disdain for dissent, and the need for conformity.

Spoken like someone who didn't see the segment and probably never saw O'Reilly either.

Th judge had latitude on the amount of bail to set. Initially, he did not think she was a risk and set a low bail. Her demeanor in court convinced him that she did not deserve a break. Adios

The little bitch had it coming

30 days is a good education for her

You know that her punishment is not a big deal when both me and rightwinger agree about it.

People can be rebels all they want, just not in a court. Actually correct that. You CAN be a rebel in a court, just be prepared to cool your heels in lockup for a time.

Even after she got her 30 days she still showed attitude in court

Unfortunately, her new notoriety will only make her bolder next time

Shes 18 and will be going into Gen Pop probably. Maybe her experience with some convicted women who have more facial hair than me will "correct" her a bit when she is let out.

Again, it's not legal for the judge to raise bail as punishment, which was my point.

Any lawyer would tell you that.

Personally, I wouldn't curse a judge off, but it's not illegal to do so.

And she was not "drugged out" as some authoritarian RWer posted, she was just being bold and fresh, like The Bill O'Reilly says people should be.

Yeah that's great advice..... :cuckoo:

I saw that segment on O'Reilly....
Marc's attitude about showing respect to people in authority is why we have a lot of problems in society today.

Really? She looks like she was strung out. And please show me where raising of bail is not legal under florida state law.

She had not even left court yet. The judge had a right to set any reasonable bail he thought necessary. At first he was inclined to grant a low bail, when she mouthed off with her sarcastic "Adios" he thought otherwise

Oliely is a nutter.

the fox news people will have to riegn him in or fire him to reeducate their purposely uninformed viewers
