Big Brother Fines Utah HS for selling soda

They should be handed out free of what hallway their vending machine is in.

So federal dollars should NOT be handed out to schools free of condition, unless the condition is a hallway vending machine?

Why?

What if the schools want to serve nothing but gummy bears and coca-cola for lunch using federal dollars, that's OK with you?

You're asking the wrong person, I want the federal gov't 100% out of education.

The more gov't gets involved in education, the faster we fall in the world rankings.

Fall further? ;)

So shouldn't you be complaing about the school for accepted federal aid?

The more gov't gets involved in education, the faster we fall in the world rankings.
And the countries whose schools sit atop those rankings provide no support at all to their school systems?

Just the consummate Socialist, aren't you?

The FED has no business in education...period.

Is any country that provides funding for public schools socialist?

According to who? You? Since when are you the dictator?

Do you honestly think its in our nation's best interest to end Pell Grants and federally subsizied student loans?

Tell me how moving the soda machine into another hallway will make lunches more healthy.

I'd be delighted to hear, Mr. Genius sir.

And it's adorable that since you fit so easily into the democrat box you think I'm a republican, rest assured I hate Romney as much as I hate your hero Obama.

Your side is the side that has to explain how moving poor nutritional choices to another hallway solves anything, I'm advocating for raising IQ's, better grades, less disciplinary problems, lower drop out rates, less drug use et al by removing poor nutrition choices from the schools. The proof is in the puddin', where poor nutrition choices are removed from the schools students do better.

Uh no, I'm on the side that says a school being fined tens of thousands of dollars for a vending machine in the wrong hallway is madness.

So you either agree with me that it's crazy or you disagree and think that it's justice being served. So you can either state your position on the issue or go out in left field and deflect with some link that had nothing to do with this topic.

I find physical fitness and health to be extremely important, I've already eaten 2 healthy meals today and will be doing P90X in a couple hours (all without gov't forcing me to, believe that?!?!?!?!). I think it's embarassing how little people care about their health in this country, but almighty gov't isn't going to all of a sudden change that by raping schools of their funding.

Good on you for being physically fit and making good food choices but-----but it's not all about you.

You must have missed it, my position is perfectly clear "I'm advocating for raising IQ's, better grades, less disciplinary problems, lower drop out rates, less drug use et al by removing poor nutrition choices from the schools. The proof is in the puddin', where poor nutrition choices are removed from the schools students do better."

What part of that do you disagree with?

Damn Soda Terrorists! Good thing we have Big Brother to protect us from them. Off to GITMO they go.

Easy. Get RID of the DOE...the money stays in the States where it belongs.

Are you saying you think the school lunch program is being run by the DOE?

USDA...what the difference? Federal noses OUT of it.

Get it ?

What's the difference? Yer kidding, right?

Not even Ron Paul is talking about shutting down the USDA. Without the USDA's involvement in the school lunch program, we wouldn't have the Farm to School Initiative. IOW's without the USDA there would be a whole lot more independent minded small farmers that would have to sell their small farms to big agri-businesses.

What is the Farm to School Initiative?

The Farm to School initiative is an effort to connect schools (K - 12) with regional or local farms in order to serve healthy meals using locally produced foods. Farm to School activities may vary from community to community depending upon demographics; however, the basic goals remain the same:
  • To meet the diverse needs of school nutrition programs in an efficient manner
  • To support regional and local farmers and thereby strengthen local food systems
  • To provide support for health and nutrition education.
The document linked below provides a one-page facts sheet on the USDA Farm to School Initiative:
What is the History of Farm to School?
Since the passage of the National School Lunch Act in 1946, key legislation has played an essential role in providing our Nation's children with access to healthier meals. Programs like the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) have provided-and continue to provide-nutritionally balanced and low-cost or free meals and snacks to children each school day. The document linked below provides an overview of key legislation related to Farm to School.

The USDA's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is focusing on Farm to School efforts that incorporate regional and local farm products into school meal programs. Schools and communities may initiate and support a variety of Farm to School activities, including nutrition education, agriculture-related lessons and curriculum, school or community gardens, farm tours, taste testing, and parent/community educational sessions.

What is USDA's Involvement in Farm to School?
USDA recognizes the growing interest among school districts and communities to incorporate regionally and locally produced farm foods into the school nutrition programs. USDA is supporting Farm to School efforts through a number of initiatives, and continues to look for ways to help facilitate this important connection.

Launched in 2009, the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Initiative has been working with the USDA’s 17 agencies to coordinate USDA’s work and investments in local and regional food systems. In response to the growing demand for Farm to School activities, the USDA Farm to School Team was developed out of the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Initiative. No, I'm NOT kidding...and you may cease with the Gubmint propaganda. :eusa_hand:

In fact? Get lost fascist.

Believe me, I know there's nothing gov't can do that you won't support.

The only thing you wouldn't support on any issue, is a scaling down of gov't, but lucky for you that'll never happen. So rejoice!

And you've won me over, you move that vending machine 20 feet, the kids in the school become smarter. That makes perfect sense. We need to hand out more fines, I remember at my high school the water fountains weren't cold enough so I didn't drink out of them much. This lessened the amount of healthy water my body took in for the day, that's gotta be a fine. I also remember all those school fundraisers we did where the school supplied us with candy bars, I bought a couple and ate them as a student to help my team, if that doesn't deserve a fine nothing does.
See this is the problem you are such a retard that you think supporting govt policies that feed people make them healthier and make them smarter means support the government kicking down your door and blowing your head to bits for no reason.

Jamie Oliver's school dinners shown to have improved academic results | Education | The Guardian
^In Greenwich schools switched to a healthier menu and as a result absences were reduced by 15%.
^Also test scores such as those in English and science increased by around 5%

The Answer Sheet - School junk food ban works, study finds
^Schools that banned "junk food" saw an 18% decline in student obesity.

Daily Kos: NYC schools feed students good food, test scores rise 16%
^New York City implemented a school lunch/breakfast/snack policy that focused on healthy food and eliminated unhealthy food choices, afterwards test scores increased by 16%

Why do you oppose policies that make children smarter and healthier?

Why are you so desperate to deflect?

The issue is a school being fined for having a vending machine in the wrong hallway.

Please, provide me a down the middle unbiased source like Daily Kos that shows me how moving the vending machine to another hallway will make the children smarter.

Ready.................set...........................GO!

Yes you ignoring reality and supporting policies that make children stupider and less healthier is me deflecting

Aren't school lunches managed by USDA?

I think I already established that pont Tick Duck...IF you would read.

*Idiot*

Then why did you try to blame DOE for a program managed, by DOE, moron?

Read the post about Government and it didn't matter...or do you need to be led by the hand to it like every helpless Statist?

WTF is your problem? Don't know how to search and read?

Get lost Tick. You're a boor. :eusa_hand:

Ad hominem attacks is all ya got? -pewsh!-

Instead of just engaging in meaningless, emotional name calling, explain why you hate American exceptionalism?

My bad. I just posted this.

I don't care if the feds do consider themselves soda police. (well I do, but that's moot) The fine is outrageous. How about "Naughty, naughty. NEXT time we may fine you"?

"It's for the children after all."

$15K is a lot of money to a school. To the feds, it's one luxury night in Vegas for GSA - where they drink harder stuff than soda.

Blood boiling...

The fine is not a huge deal. It's a minimal amount of money. It's that our liberties keep getting taken by these blow hards. I'm for undoing the public education system and anything federal where the govt. thinks they need to dictate our lives.

Since the school gets most of its money from property taxes, how many peoples taxes did it take to get the $15,000?

Children are minors and while at school they are in the governments care.

would you like your childs tutor to give them soda right before they tutor them?

What is a real laffer is that the soda machines are locked up at lunch time. Kids get a soda before lunch time and drink it at lunch. And a lot of them go off campus for a big mac, fries and a large coke.

I think you just enjoy being an antisocial, nihilist dweeb, and accuracy no longer matters to you.
