That's the problem with education today. DC orders everyone how to teach 100 million kids from Alaska to Florida.

As I've said for a long time, DoE should be disbanded. I'm hoping DeVos has that plan. I know Dr Arnn who was on the short list for the job would have done it.

As to my example, that is NOT Common Core. That is a method, or more commonly known as the curriculum. The curriculums that align with Common Core often use that approach. As another poster pointed out, in the 60s /70s that was called "New Math".

Common Core is standards, not curriculum. I taught to the Common Core standards when they were required but I taught using my own curriculum for Algebra, Geometry, and the other topics I taught.

A method every teacher is ORDERED to use, no matter the student.

Close friends with three teachers, two of which were responsible for implementing common core in their respective districts. Both were in love with it initially. Today all three despise it. Kids are not getting it. It does not work. Epic failure. Johnny can't read, write, or do math.

How does turning subtraction into addition make people understand it?

We're lagging behind the rest of the western world when it comes to education, and you say "if it ain't broke..."

The point is ideas like using addition to solve a subtraction problem, or vice versa allow students to see how all of these concepts are interrelated. Math is more than just memorizing an individual set of rules for each type of operation.

It's the difference between memorizing rules, and understanding.

Do some research into the Reece Committee and the findings of Norman Dodd. That is when the educational system and the fabian socialists joined hands. Right around that time you had buck-toothed commie teachers and administrators teaching "Diveeeeeeerrrrrsity" using PBS to push it in the late 60's and early 70's. The pushing of "separate but equal" agenda was pushed to the max using TV programming that was nothing but a propaganda tool to further to divide us while we never saw the man behind the curtain.....and the leftard clown posse did the heavy lifting back then......... and they continue it to this day because pseudo "OPPRESSION" is all they have to sell. Really? What state do you live in? Go compare your current standards to Common Core and see if there is any major difference. In my state, they dropped Common Core, changed the name to Kentucky Core and went on about their business. Almost nothing changed.

Indiana did the same thing before Congress eliminated the incentives to use Common Core.
