Arizona Governor Jan Brewer says will not seek another term | Reuters

(Reuters) - Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, a Republican who clashed with the Obama administration over immigration and once wagged her finger at the president on an airport tarmac, said on Wednesday she would not run for re-election, ending speculation about whether she would seek a third term.

Arizona governors are limited to serving two terms at the state's helm. But Brewer, 69, rose from the position of Arizona secretary of state to take over mid-term in 2009 from Janet Napolitano, a Democrat who left to head the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

There had been speculation she could seek another four years in office on the grounds she had not served two complete terms.

Brewer, announcing her decision at a school once attended by her sons in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale, said she felt it was time to "pass the torch of leadership."

This could make the AZ gubernatorial race an interesting one, but in terms of the electoral history of this state, it is still advantage: GOP no matter how you shuffle the cards.

She "can't" seek a third term...Arizona's constitution limits governors to two terms. She finished Napolitano's term and then did a full term from 2010 to 2014.

But she did not serve out two full terms: she assumed office when Janet Napolitano was selected to be part of President Obama's cabinet and therefore, according to AZ law, she was still eligible to run for a 2nd complete term of her own.

the rule includes a partial term

finish someones term and you only get to be gov once more

From the OP link:

Some legal experts had suggested that one reading of the Arizona constitution's provision for term limits might have allowed Brewer to run again.

In other words, it's a grey zone because this is the first time Arizona would have had to deal with this eventuality, had she decided to run.

so?

How many democrats are resigning? not seeking reelection in CONGRESS where it MATTERS to all of us?

six, seven....a whole frikken slew of them

good riddence
