CounterPunch Diary
Dr Arnold's Diet: Take a Steroid, Kick A Woman
By ALEXANDER COCKBURN

California's nurses have got him rattled, and it's already costing him. A February 23 Field Poll showed his approval ratings declining ten points since last September, a significant drop. One might have thought that it's a no-brainer to realize that kicking Florence Nightingale's butt is not a sure-fire way to the public's heart. But the Governor is so used to browbeating the press that he thought he could do the same to the California Nurses' Association (CNA), one of the most militant unions in the country, with 60,000 members and representing registered nurses at 171 health facilities throughout the state. Schwarzenegger has been trying to roll back the union's gains on nurse/ patient ratios, safety standards and kindred issues.

Schwarzenegger's version of Howard Dean's scream came in December in Long Beach. As the nurses barracked him during a speech, he denounced them as one of the "special interests" and said, "I'm always kicking their butt." This witty response from the breast-grabber got plenty of play, and did the nurses nothing but good. At a January Capitol protest in Sacramento the nurses carried coffins and had a New Orleans jazz group play a death march. During the Super Bowl they flew a small plane over the steroid-swollen Governor's party at his Santa Monica home. When he was in Washington they took out a full-page ad in Roll Call flaying his record. During a Schwarzenegger speech in a Sacramento hotel, nurses held up a banner saying RNs Say Stop the Power Grab.

On February 15, when Schwarzenegger and his platoons of body guards and flunkies trooped into a screening of Be Cool, 300 nurses demonstrated. Kelly DiGiacomo, 46 years old and 5'2", a nurse at a Kaiser hospital near Sacramento, had a ticket. She ensconced herself in the fourth row, wearing her nurse's scrubs.

A bodyguard rushed up, and under the pretext of a possible meeting with the governor, led her to a room with a California Highway Patrol cop at the door and began to grill DiGiacomo. A few days later a CHP investigator called. DiGiacomo asked why she should be considered a threat. The investigator replied, "Well, you were wearing a nurse's uniform." "Oh, sure, the international terrorist uniform," DiGiacomo scoffed. Californians scoffed with her when they saw the news stories. At least Bush and Cheney can claim they're being targeted by hairy men from the dark side of Mecca. Here's Arnold hiding behind his goons from the woman who cares for you when you're in the hospital.

I wonder if poor Alexander the Author has seen a nurse about that terrible condition of his....

He probably recived that condition from the moron who posted his article! :D

LOL! Of course, we know the PC solution to THAT problem: "Wrap that rascal".

Like there's enough latex in the WORLD!

If George Bush said that Social Security was in a crisis and almost bankrupt and that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction some here would believe him!

Hardly a "comeback". It's absolutely true!

Let me give you an example. Do you still believe that Iraq was behind the 9/11 attack?

Hee Hee! I would love to see if somebody would answer yes to your question on this one!

No, almost all the people here know that Bush actually said many times that there was no direct connection between Iraq and the attack on the WTC. And in fact argued that very thing with many a Dem long before the election. We were clear that there was no connection between Saddam and the WTC.

The Social Security pipedream is unsustainable. Do the math, for Chrissake. We've got a President in the White Hoouse who is in a position - and has the balls in his britches - to address the "untouchable"; the "third rail" of American politics. You remember - it's that thing that was a "good idea" when Al Gore brought it up.

As to WMDs, flush out your headgear. That issue died when the Russians got caught smuggling weapons out of Iraq - about two steps ahead of Oil-for-Food Scandal investigators. Your hero, Walter Cronkite, broke the story - thinking he was hurting George Bush's re-election campaign. What an asshole!

No, almost all the people here know that Bush actually said many times that there was no direct connection between Iraq and the attack on the WTC. We were clear that there was no connection between Saddam and the WTC.

George Bush never said that once, much less many times! Bush and other White House representative did just the opposite many times. They strongly suggested, without proving it, that there was some kind of connection between Iraq and the WTC attack. That's why millions of people believed that the invasion of Iraq was in retaliation for the 9/11 attack! People got that idea from the White House.

Here's just a few examples of statements from Bush/Cheney that promoted that idea. I can find many more if you'd like.

On March 3, 2003 Bush said: "The attacks of September the 11, 2001 showed what the enemies of America did with four airplanes. We are determined to confront threats wherever they arise. And, as a last resort, we must be willing to use military force. We are doing everything we can to avoid war in Iraq. But if Saddam Hussein does not disarm peacefully, he will be disarmed by force."

That's hardly disconnecting Iraq from the 9/11 attack.

And on March 19, 2003 Bush said: " The people of the United States and our friends and allies will not live at the mercy of an outlaw regime [Iraq] that threatens the peace with weapons of mass murder. We will meet that threat now, with our Army, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and Marines, so that we do not have to meet it later with armies of fire fighters and police and doctors on the streets of our cities. [Repeat Of The 9/11 WTC Attack]

And on March 31, 2003 Bush declared: "After our nation was attacked on September the 11th, 2001, America made a decision: We're not going to permit terrorists and terror states to plot and plan and grow in strength while we do nothing. And the actions we're taking abroad against a terror network and against the regime in Iraq are removing a grave danger to all free nations."

Would you describe the above comments as two more examples of an effort by Bush to disconnect Iraq from the 9/11 attack?

How about this .......

Cheney Link of Iraq, 9/11 challenged
By Anne E. Kornblut and Bryan Bender
Boston Globe Staff and Globe Correspondent
9/16/2003

Evidence of a connection, if any exists, has never been made public. Details that Cheney cited to make the case that the Iraqi dictator had ties to Al Qaeda have been dismissed by the CIA as having no basis, according to analysts and officials. Even before the war in Iraq, most [some did?] Bush officials did not explicitly state that Iraq had a part in the attack on the United States two years ago.

But Cheney left that possibility wide open in a nationally televised interview two days ago, claiming that the administration is learning "more and more" about connections between Al Qaeda and Iraq before the Sept. 11 attacks. The statement surprised some analysts and officials who have reviewed intelligence reports from Iraq. Vincent Cannistraro, a former CIA counterterrorism specialist, said that Cheney's "willingness to use speculation and conjecture as facts in public presentations is appalling. It's astounding."

Nonetheless, 69 percent of Americans believe that Hussein probably had a part in attacking the United States, according to a recent Washington Post poll. And Democratic senators have charged that the White House is fanning the misperception by mentioning Hussein and the Sept. 11 attacks in ways that suggest a link.

Nonetheless, Cheney, in the "Meet the Press" interview Sunday, insisted that the United States is learning more about the links between Al Qaeda and Hussein.

Millions of Americans still believe that Iraq was involved in the 9/11 attack. Who on this board still believes that myth and the old "Sadam has weapons of mass destruction" b.s.?

Really? Well, I think you should notify the Bush government. They clearly haven't heard about this news about where all the WMD's went. You think they would have called a news conference on this. Ya mean they don't know about it???!!!!!

Please show a little more respect for the intelligence of most people on this board. You don't really expect us to buy that tall tale, do you? Get serious!

Wny even George Bush didn't know about "it"!!!!

Have you notified the White House about your "discovery"? I'm sure they'd love to know. I only see one problem for you. They might require you to provide a little evidence to back up your absurd claim, even if you have to fabricate it!

Hell, you ought to call a news conference on your discovery so that you can make a fool of yourself to the entire nation!

Just using your usual method to duck and dodge debate. Call a poster you disagree with a name, like Itstheretard.

Well, if you're incapable of debating and refuting a post you disagree with that's too bad. But, if all you can do is engage in personal insults against people you disagree with at least demonstrate some humor and originality. Itsaretard????!!!!! That's the very best you can do? Pathetic!

Perhaps we need an "insult board" for those who are mentally challenged and can't debate issues. You could be the moderator of that board! You certainly have the experience and credentials.

Russia Moved Iraqi WMD

Moscow Moved Weapons to Syria and Lebanon

According to a former top Bush administration official, Russian special forces teams moved weapons of mass destruction out of Iraq to Syria.

"I am absolutely sure that Russian Spetsnatz units moved WMD out of Iraq before the war," stated John Shaw, the former deputy undersecretary for international technology security.

Story Continues Below

According to Shaw, Russian units hid Saddam's arsenal inside Syria and in Lebanon's Bekka valley.

"While in Iraq I uncovered detailed information that Spetsnatz units shredded records and moved all WMD and specified advanced munitions out of Iraq to Syria and Lebanon," stated Shaw during an exclusive interview.

"I received information from several sources naming the exact Russian units, what they took and where they took both WMD materials and conventional explosives. Moscow made a 2001 agreement with Saddam Hussein to clear up all Russian involvement in WMD systems in Iraq," stated Shaw.

Shaw's assertions match the information provided by U.S. military forces that satellite surveillance showed extensive large-vehicle traffic crossing the Syrian border prior to Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Moscow Paranoid About WMD

Shaw's information also backs allegations by a wide variety of sources of Russia's direct involvement in Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program. One U.N. bioterrorism expert announced that Russia has been Iraq's "main supplier of the materials and know-how to weaponize anthrax, botulism and smallpox."

Writing in the Wall Street Journal, Robert Goldberg cited former U.N. weapons inspector Richard Spertzel, who stated that Moscow supplied Baghdad with fermentation equipment to produce biotoxins.

According to Spertzel, the Russians on the U.N. inspection team in Iraq were "paranoid" about his efforts to uncover smallpox production.

Goldberg noted that no country has "done more to rebuild" Saddam's chemical and biological weapons programs or "been more aggressive in helping hide the truth" than Russia.

It is a fact that Saddam Hussein rose to power backed by Russian weapons and Russian money. Saddam was in debt to Moscow for over $8 billion for the arms he purchased from Russia when he was captured by U.S. forces.

The primary Iraqi chemical weapons were VX nerve gas and mustard gas, a blistering agent, both obtained from Russia.

According to the book "Russian Military Power," published in 1982, "It is known that the Soviets maintain stocks of CW (chemical weapons) agents."

The two primary Russian chemical weapons in the 1982 Soviet inventory were the nerve agent "VX" and "blistering agents - developments of mustard gas used so effectively in World War I."

Russian Chemical Weapons in Iraq

Iraq did most of its WMD killing using Russian-made MiG and Sukhoi aircraft equipped with chemical sprayers. In addition, Saddam used French-made artillery and helicopters to dump gas on Iranian troops and Iraqi Kurds.

Iraq obtained Russian delivery systems and the same inventory of Russian-made chemical weapons at the same time. Iraqi SU-22 Fitter attack jets were armed with Warsaw Pact-designed bombs filled with chemical weapons. Iraq used these Russian jet fighters to drop chemical weapons on Iranian troops during the Iran-Iraq war.

Iraq tried to use these SU-22 jets during the 1991 Gulf War, but they were detected and destroyed on the ground before they could launch a deadly chemical attack.

Other Russian weapons found with chemical weapons include the FROG-7 missile, 122 mm rockets, 152 mm artillery and the M-1937 82 mm mortars. All the Iraqi artillery missiles, rockets, shells and mortar rounds filled with chemical weapons are of Russian design.

Iraqi forces were trained by Russians in the use of chemical weapons and equipped by Russia with anti-chemical suits. The Iraqi armed forces were trained, equipped and supplied with the proper logistics to perform chemical warfare by Russia.

Lebanon and Syria

The arming of Iraq with such weapons has a direct impact on events today in the Middle East. The presence of former Iraqi WMD systems in Lebanon raises serious questions surrounding the Feb. 14 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Many blame Syria for Hariri's murder.

However, the possibility that Hariri discovered the location of the Iraqi WMD systems inside his country lends some credible backing to a Syrian assassination effort to silence him.

In addition, the sudden sale of advanced missile and other weapons to Damascus by Moscow also supports the allegation that Syria is hiding something for Russia.

Russian weapons makers have previously insisted on hard, cold cash payments for their missiles, especially after the fall of Saddam and the collapse of credit deals done with Baghdad. More importantly, the Syrian economy is in bad shape, making it difficult for Damascus to come up with the required money for advanced Russian weapons.

Instead, it now appears that Moscow has extended both very good terms and no down payment required to Syria for an extensive purchase of advanced missiles and weapons. This is in contrast to weapons sales to other "good" Russian customers such as China, which can afford to pay up front for weapon systems.

CIA Failed

There is no question that the Russian effort to remove Iraqi WMD systems was the most successful intelligence operation of the 21st century. The Russians were able to move hundreds of tons of chemical, biological and nuclear materials without being discovered by CIA satellites or NSA radio listening posts.

"There is a clear sense on how effective they were," noted Shaw.

"The fact that the CIA did not know shows just how successful the Russian operation was," he concluded.
